My condolences on your loss. I found hobbies such as yours help to focus the mind and give time to move forward with life after the loss of a close family member. Many followers of your videos admire your talents and learn from seeing you work on vintage equipment. You also have a knack for storytelling. Hoping good things come your way soon. -Adrian

Sorry to hear about the loss of your sister. The video was helpful and useful in teaching the value of testing coils and transformers before jumping into a restoration. Thanks for doing these.

I know what it's like to have a family member have a severe stroke and die in a few days. This happened to my mother in 2012.It is rough.I have also been in a similar situation to where you are with this radio, but with stuff that is much higher end.I found a home brew console stereo in 2013 at Goodwill for $35.It had a dead midrange Garrard changer I resold on Facebook, but I bought the console for a matched pair of a HH Scott tube amp and tuner. It took over a year, but I found a guy who restores old tube guitar amps, and tube stereo components. After he got to looking at the Scotts,he told me the same thing.Something happened to the Scotts, maybe they were fried in a lightning strike, but it would cost too much to repair them.As much or more than buying working sets on ebay.So I ended up selling them to the guy for a minimal amount for parts. It does happen.

Sorry to hear about your sister, my condolences. Good call on that radio, it really is too far gone. If the owner does want it fixed, I wouldn't let him off the hook with a cheap repair bill....

With regard to the coils in early 1930s Philco sets, it seems to be common practice to have a go at either repairing or rewinding an open winding as it seems that the majority end up with at least one bad coil no matter how they are kept. Fortunately the windings are usually flat wound rather then donut shaped so it's fairly easy to do apparently, as long as you use the correct gauge of wire with the correct number of turns, wound in the right direction. I may need to do some rewinding myself, I picked up a Philco model 81 last year, the two band sibling to the model 80.

Sorry to hear about your sister. Definitely understand that sometimes you just have to throw in the towel. Some things are just not worth the effort required. I've done it with electronics and cars, sometimes it isn't easy but it has to be done.

The owner could install a permanent magnet speaker in it and connect that speaker to a modern radio and use the antique radio as an extension speaker and refurbish the cabinet and refinish it. That’s what I do with antique radios that have bad transformers or IF coils that I cannot get parts for

Sorry about your sister. I finally found a good GE super radio for ten bucks at a flea market in Manchester TN. It’s in excellent shape and has good sound and strong bass. Also found an internet radio at a goodwill. It’s missing an 18 volt 2.5 amp dc power supply. I tried 12 volt from car outlet but not enough to keep the radio powered on. How can I boost or step up 12 volts up to 18 volts dc which the radio requires?

I have a question, I am working an a 1947 admiral tube amp. I got the recaping done but I have to replace the output audio transformer because it is shot. I have no place that will fix it. So do I have it the same when I change it or can I go larger when I get a new one? Its a 3k ohm to 4 ohm speaker.

I am SOOOO sorry to hear about your Sister! Just always remember she's in a better place now & we'll see her again someday! And as far as the radio...u can't fix 'em all, can you? I mean, I KNOW if ANY ONE can fix it, You CAN, but economically? Did the owner ever okay the repair or was it declined & scrappt? Just curious!
