Wonderful video. It is great seeing how skilled mechanics do their work in different parts of the world. This is very informative and entertaining.

They did not put in a pre-load on any of the bearings...
@yt6503 жыл бұрын
No pre-load on the bearing no torquing of the pinion gear bearings on and on and on. This is for clicks and for people who don’t understand actually what’s going on, they think this is wonderful. That rear would be done in an hour if it was work hard.

@@yt650 And yet they seem to have plenty of business, so perhaps they are getting it right!
@yt6503 жыл бұрын
@@mal4383 Please don’t take offense to my comments. It may seem like they have lots of business and they may in fact have that, but I can tell you a differential ring and pinion of that size takes an enormous amount of stress and trust me and others who have commented without proper assembly it is destined to fail. You may not know this but the only one of those gears that is automatically in place is the pinion gear, the Ring gear must be adjusted with shims to set the proper depth with the pinion gear and if you do not understand what that means that means you don’t know what you’re talking about and there’s no shame in that unless you’ve done this kind of work. When I was a parts man in a Chevrolet truck dealer the one thing that was almost never ordered were the shim kit for the ring gear. The customer would have to come back and order them because they thought they knew more than we did. The original shims from the manufacture are cast shims the replacement shims or multiple thickness and are made of steel and Babbitt.
@mal43833 жыл бұрын
@@yt650 Absolutely no offence taken and none intended below, so. May I respectfully suggest you go back and have another look, from the 8 minute mark. You will notice that that diff has screw adjusters, not shims, for the crown wheel, and if you take particular notice you'll see them remove the lock tabs and adjust the crown wheel whilst checking the backlash(by turning the pinion). Keep watching and you may even notice them putting grease on individual crown wheel teeth and turning it to check the contact patches. Maybe he should be using a dial gauge to set the backlash, but I'd be willing to wager it's spot on. You have no need to tell me the stresses a truck diff is put through, having worked at driving road trains, and four and six wheel drive trucks over more sand dunes than you've had hot dinners, I've got a pretty fair idea. Also spent a lot of my working life operating, maintaining and repairing farm machinery, but I am not a mechanic and I've never sold spare parts, so what would I know.
@yt6503 жыл бұрын
@@mal4383 I was premature in my condemnation of them not thinking about shims, and you are right the ring gear and the depth into the pinion are adjustable. Did you check the shimmingof the pinion gear when they were putting it together? Oh it seems to me they use the same shims to set the depth of the pinion gear which will certainly be different from the old to the new. Will it work, yes it will will last, time will tell. The manufacture set specifications on this differential unit and as far as I can see virtually none of them were followed. What they can get away with in that part of the world is different than the part I live in. I’ve been involved in decades past with patch together fix it the best you can kind of work in no mans land, only to be absolutely certain I fixed everything properly. Murphy’s Law applies what can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible moment. I noticed they cleaned the bearings but I wonder how much metal from the damaged gears damaged the bearings. They might be right back where they started in due time. Thank you for your comments. No offense taken.

Why are tapered rollers generally adjusted so tightly anyway? There's a video of service members maintaining an f-35 landing gear and they put the rollers so tight they could barely spin the wheel. 😳

So much for checking the proper pinion preload or seeing the tooth contact pattern, smearing grease on a tooth doesn't cut it.

10 years ago I might have agreed with you. Given the direction the world is going I'm thinking it might be better for these boys to learn a profession early to ply when they become men! This is the way of the world and what we are seeing in the western world is the anomaly! These kids are happy, productive and working with their Dad! I'm guessing from your sour comment that if you had a Dad you spent less time with him in a month than these kids do in a day!
