Thank you for this video. I had the exact same problem. After buying a set of o rings , done the job in no time. The only problem I had was I had no bung . So as it happened I had an old blank plug from the top of an old rad and it fitted perfectly so I could repair the valve. Thanks again and keep posting.

How do you get the cap off a chrome heater valve? I ask because the caps on my towel rail appear to be absolutely welded on, whereas on the ordinary radiators they just come right off with a little tug. I'm reluctant to apply any more pressure to the caps on the towel rail valves for fear of breaking something. What am I missing here?
@HeatingGeek
@HeatingGeek 9 ай бұрын
The slim top on the valve unscrews Have a look at the video and you should see 2 separate parts to the top of the cap

Are the inserts for those towel rails available separately? Not an issue with o-rings but one where the spindle tip has been broken. Could do with a similar approach and only replace the insert instead of the whole 90 degree bend, less messing about. I'm assuming the valve inserts are standard sizes. I guess I can always get the whole bend, remove the insert from those and swap only that.
@HeatingGeek
@HeatingGeek Жыл бұрын
Not as far as I'm aware. I would just replace the whole valve in this situation.

Very helpful as my bathroom rad has exactly the same leak from the chrome valve, it was minimal... but I removed the end chrome cap to take a close look and now it's dripping faster (this may be just because the cap was slowing down the drip). Can you help to give me an idea of how much someone should charge to do this repair ...as you're not near me and was wondering what I should expect to pay.. cheers.
@HeatingGeek
@HeatingGeek 11 ай бұрын
Hi Grant, I guess that depends on labour rates in your area. 99% of engineers are going to replace the valve, not the o ring. So between 1 and 3 hours labour plus the part.

I currently have a similar / the same problem ~ I’ve a chrome towel rail opposite the toilet, the bottom of it at the far side is just leaking water onto the floor so I’ll use the loo & tread water around - only just noticed this as I’ve recently moved & the bathroom apart from this leak is immaculate ~ I’m on top of cleaning regularly & always open the window when I’ve used the shower to get the moisture out ~ the leak’s obviously something I’ve got to get seen to before winter comes

Cheap rubbish valves HG. Relying on O ring seals instead of a proper packing gland. They look the same as good valves until you take the cap off and see the circllip. Manufacturers churning out and merchants stocking absolute rubbish.
