I fixed MANY of them when I was an A/V tech. Glad to hear you playing Jetro Tull ! Been a Tull fan since, well about the time that record player was made LOL. I remember buying 89t ‘s for like $2.95 each, back in 1988ish. I had to issue them to teachers, every time the record had a little crackle they wanted to replace needles. My favorite was a music teacher who told me the speed was “an eighth of a measure off.” I looked at her, trying to keep from laughing, and said as serious as I could…..”how can you tell?” Glad I’m retired,I work on what I want to now. Good job brother….. and I have wired stuff up backassard too. 😅

Hope you feel better soon Bryan - I was brought up the same way. If I was caught stealing I would have been belted so hard I wouldnt be able to sit and I would have had to apologize and give back whatever it was. Today some parents don't seem to care although my kids know that it is wrong and you have to work hard for things you want. I enjoyed your repair and story.

So true. Yesterday, I called local police about two youths doing "pop-a-wheelies" - riding with their front bike tires up the air weaving in out of traffic. The desk officer said even if we did confront them, we really can't do anything beside issue warnings. I said to the officer: They need the fear of God instilled in them. The officer replied "That's up to their parents. Apparently good parenting is absent in their household".

Thank you for the videos. I have a Newcomb EDT-12P that I gave your cleaning and re-lube treatment and it runs very well. I look forward to your preamp solution for this model. I also have a Newcomb RT-1225 V model that has a loud him. I have replaced the electrolytics, but hum remains. I am also looking for a preamp and cartridge replacement solution. There is a loud initial hum, that settles into a constant 60 cycle sounding hum. Possible ground loop. I will keep trying to solve source of hum. Thanks again.

I always ask the question: What do I want to be remembered as? Do I want to be a thief, or a giver? Do I want to be rotten or sweet? Would I want to be known as a real nasty guy who does nothing and always taking credit for other people's work, or be known for being kind and doing good works? Would I want to leave behind beauty or ghastly ugliness? In the end, thieves never win.

After repairing a 1975 Newcomb record player one can see how much better it was than any crap made today in China. Your right about the 89T needles being overpriced but they are rare. You're only human and feeling ill and well slow down and double check replacing things always best.

If the voltage is one third the output, it will have one ninth the power, so that's close to 10dB less output (maybe 8-9dB less) and that is a lot. An on making mistakes even with experience - it's so true we make mistakes. I've been writing computer programs since the early to mid 80s and I still make plenty of mistakes when writing. I still amaze myself at some of the silly mistakes I make and how hard some of them are to find and diagnose.

Watching this it reminded me of the first and so far only time I released the magic smoke from an electrolytic capacitor. I installed a capacitor rated for a maximum of 16 volts in a circuit where there was 24 volts across the capacitor. This capacitor came from a car radio from the early 1970’s that wasn’t designed to vent its guts, it exploded.

The original is a crystal cartridge, which do have a high output and so don't need much amplification. I found the same thing with some Dansette record players which originally had crystal cartridges, replace with a modern ceramic cartridge, you don't get much volume.

I have a Westinghouse suitcase Model H75AC1 and it was working despite being very dirty from being left open in a garage attic for 30 years. I removed the top plate and lifted it to remove leaves and debris that was underneath and walked away for an hour. Came back and my husband closed it and put it on the floor upside-down causing everything to get tossed around. I reassembled and turned it on and it spins but wont turn off. I looked at the mechanism underneath and something is causing the switch to stop halfway between on and off...I followed it all and Im baffled. Do you know where I can find a diagram possibly of how all of it should go together? I can only find diagrams of the electrical

I'm more worried about the condition of the needle/cartrige, all of mine were replaced when you could find an 89T at a reasonable price. Also I keep the tracking force down to about 5 grams. That's about the minimum for that 89T.

Well most of the meth heads I know or have had dealings with don't use eBay that sure in the world ain't got that skill set going on or the mind level to be able to comprehend and handle and do that so more than likely it got taken to a pawn shop if they thought they could get a dollar for it or more likely it got taken apart because they thought it had some copper and they could scrap it out is more likely what happened with it trust me been around tons of them I know exactly how they think and what they do with stuff they're going to go the cheapest way they can and if that means taking it to the scrap yard that's what they'll do if they got 10 cents for it they don't care
