It was neat to hear "Flashlight" as the first song the radio was playing when you fixed it. Nice video! You're right about older music being better.

Wow. That's about 200 hours of listening time on a set of 4 AA cells at only 12 milliamps. That's a very well made and efficient radio. Truly a nice machine. It's a shame that it had to be one of the few parts in the radio that can not be had new.

Maybe the use of the earphone has more to do with extending the life of the batteries than listening in a noisy location, or a room where silence is required. Cheap batteries back then ran dry very quickly, then leaked :-Z

Yeah, 200 is probably a bit high. Maybe more like 100 or less with good quality carbon-zinc batteries. One assumes RCA branded batteries were on the good quality end of the spectrum. I'm not sure if carbon-zinc cells leak or not. I know modern Chinese made alkalines leak terribly.

I remember back in the mid-70's and well into the 80's, there was a station where I used to live, KKOA, that played current hits. Listened to that all the time. Today, they're still on the air, playing "classic rock" tunes. They don't play as much music as before as they are also a sports station.

Great job there, and some nice in-depth troubleshooting. No one would find a fault like that by replacing capacitors, that's for sure. That radio has a nice tone to it, sounds good for a portable

Your persistence paid off! That was a terrific job of breaking down the circuit! Another weird RCA transistor problem I've found (more than once) is excessive resistance on the bias transistors on the push/pull finals. Well done!

8:30 Was the connection of the earphone to the output of the first driver thus avoiding the complimentary symmetry pair, a means of conserving battery life thru use of Hi-Z earphones - - their impedance is not stated on the crktry schematic
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 7 жыл бұрын
Not often these days to see a high impedance speaker, still it was probably a cost saving not to need an output matching transformer.

A damn fine example of troubleshooting! Two friends of mine do "cleanouts" on Long Island, I'll send them the link to this video, so that maybe they can come up with a similar RCA parts radio which will yield that component.

Nice repair job sometimes I just replace the caps because I'm lazy. I first clean all switches and controls then it's caps and check the transistors.

6:40 I think this push-pull arrangement was to conserve current use, the battery life was also extended by connecting the "earphones" to the first driver. The center tap could be for powering a field coil arrangement?

In the Portland area, we have a station that plays 1950s-1970s music (known as adult standards or nostalgia by industry people). However, it is up for sale and will soon be going bye-bye.

I live in the East Texas area and there's still 2 or 3 FM stations that play good music. 106.5 has trashified itself for the most part after selling out to Jack FM, 101.5 is going with a lot of modern country, which isn't really country at all, so really 1 or 2 stations that still play good music. Over on AM, there's literally 1 or 2 talk stations on the entire dial. That's it. 102.3 FM sold out and went off the air about 9 months ago, but IIRC, it came back on the air a few months ago.

I should upload the unboxing of my Zenith H500. I was floored it arrived in one piece, I wanted a restoration project not a potential box full of broken stuff ironically resembling a terrible DIY kit. To be clear it survived...somehow! Edit: and as for putting it away when it gets annoying...sage advice.

That was interesting. I did once (and only once so far) see a small, low voltage electrolytic cap shorted in a tv someone else was working on. This was in the mid 90's, in a TV that was only a few years old, at a TV repair shop I worked at briefly when I was a kid. They had someone who would come in when they had certain jobs or heavy work loads who did know his stuff. Took him several sessions but he found the shorted cap in the S-video section. Symptom was (if I remember) no picture at all. I was doing something basic on a VCR while paying attention to him and his continuity meter went off and he shouted 'there it is!'. The other two guys who owned the shop came in and they quickly worked out what to do and replaced the bad cap with two other ones and carefully checked the picture quality and it looked damn good to me.

I miss having a dedicated Beautiful Music format station on radio. I love renting a car that has Sirius XM satellite radio, because you can tune into their Escape Channel 69 and hear some really great old-time easy listening, and there are a few online stations that try and preserve the format, but it's been completely eliminated from terrestrial radio, which makes me sad. When people in the late 80s and early 90s began deriding it as "elevator music" you began to see it slowly disappear, usually being relegated to overnights on some lite rock stations, then totally phased out.

If you want an AM station that plays decent music then you may have to wire up your own transmitter. At least you can get the music you prefer from the internet and play it through the transmitter.

I was thinking. The center tap on the primary doesn't have to be grounded for it to work. If you separate the center tap from ground with an appropriate capacitor you might have been able to continue using the transformer. Edit: Never mind. Looked at the schematic again. Q3 collector needs a DC path to work.

You could capacitor couple the diode to pin 2 and disconnect pin 5 by cutting the trace.
@xsc1000
@xsc1000 7 жыл бұрын
It's not that easy, because you don't know where exactly is the short connection - it could be in fact close to pin2. Also AM detector creates DC voltage for fist stage AGC. So after coupling capacitor on pin 2 you should add resistor to pin5 to restore correct DC voltage for AGC.

It's not common to hear "Amperes". It's usually "amps". I know "amps" is short for "Amperes". Even the Rolling Stones used 50 Ampere fuse in a song. (Guess the song) Good repair!
