Repair Peeling Kitchen Cabinets

Peeling of the plastic layer of kitchen cabinets is a common problem and it can also lead to chipping of the plastic finish. Repairing the peeling is simple and can add years to the life of the cabinets. This DIY repair requires only simple tools and materials and can be done by anyone.

A really helpful post, well described and a good pace, plus some very good comments. I will definitely try this on my damaged door. I will check the suitability of my contact adhesive, which in the UK is often Evostick. One question though: was there a reason why, having built up the layers with undercoat (very sensible), you didn't put some gloss on top? Thankfully my door is white so I don't have to colour-match your ivory!

I have this issue but the edge doesn’t fit to the edge anymore. Can it be heated and stretched to make it fit to the edge?

@@bmc1717 after looking into how much it would cost to repair and was a lot. We decided to heat it and glue it. We couldn’t stretch it but we clamped the edge down as close as we could get it. Once it dried any wood showing was rolled with an oil based cabinet paint. It is not the best but it’s on the bottom edge so you can’t really see it. Had to repair 5 doors. 2 were worse then the other 3. 1 we did cut the thermafoil off to the edge as it wouldn’t glue down then painted it.

This repair depends entirely on the material of the plastic. Tried this with mine and contact cement will melt the plastic.
