I just put the top on a German violin. It didn’t,t have liners in it. I was amazed at how little glue was reguired. It seems to play and sound ok.

Would you like to make a major guide about varnish retouching?
@andrewcole63674 жыл бұрын
I think that might be a very popular request
@maestrokimon4 жыл бұрын
This is indeed a popular request. The problem is that it is very hard to film the colors correctly of a transparent varnish. I have tried some times but the result was not satisfying. Still trying thought, maybe something for the future.

Thank You for this wonderful series.... all of your videos. I am a hobby luthier... never to be professional. I am 65, and a former carpenter, so at least I understand something about wood! I have a puzzle to solve. I have a 1960's German student violin with nice solid wood spruce top, and Maple back and sides. It needs a neck reset to resolve the very high action, and short bridge. Also, there is a thick, very shiny finish on it which looks synthetic. My puzzle is this: the ribs are not parallel to one another, or square to the top and back. There are no cracks, and nothing is loose, it just looks like someone sat on it while the glue was wet, and the top moved towards the neck in relationship to the back. My impulse is to take it entirely apart, and straighten everything out. Am I being a fool to want to repair this while I am resetting the neck?

Thank you very much for your kind words. I don't understand exactly what the problem is with the instrument but I think that I would leave it as is. There might have been some old, poorly done repairs. If you want you can send me some pictures by e-mail.

I have a violin whose back has detached slightly in the central part, perhaps due to the pressure of the soundpost. Do you have any video where this damage is repaired?
@maestrokimon2 жыл бұрын
No not really. You have to treat is like a normal crack.

Nicely done. Why did you decide to replace the bass bar?
@maestrokimon4 жыл бұрын
Hello Ron! Because the old one cannot sustain the weight of the strings on the long term.

Hello Mr Kimon, How thick is your butterknife that you use to open instruments? Thanks
@maestrokimon3 жыл бұрын
Hello Pedro. The backside is as thick as it was, about 1,5mm and the front is sharpened to 0mm.

No, I didn't. Did it on feeling.

@@maestrokimon You decide to do it on feeling, because it is a bench made violin, and tuning under instrument (app+mic) control does not upgrade it’s sound significantly, only making it louder?

Maestro, I have seen many violins where the artist that repaired the instrument put in a repair label or signed inside. You do not do this, is this not the correct thing to do?
@maestrokimon3 жыл бұрын
I don't do it because a lot of instruments are property of a client of my client. Also I don't feel the need to put my name in an instrument I haven't made. I thin that this was mostly a trend of the late 1800 - early 1900.

@@maestrokimon This was a prevalent practice in the watch repair trade, to document repair and service history. Look at back case cover inside surface of an old pocket watch of the better made watches (those worth repairing).
