That New Holland baler is very old, but that just shows that back in the day, quality meant a lot and maintenance will prolong the life a lot longer and you do a good job of keeping your equipment serviced.

Keeping up on the maintenance of a baler is like putting money in the bank! I would recommend to pull the fixed knife and either replace or sharpen, but there should be shims behind one of the knives to set the proper clearance. I have not set any on a baler like yours, but on some plungers the guide bearings should also be adjusted to keep any "slop" out of the plunger as it passes by the counter knife. 👍

Also, I would blow dust out outside the garage to avoid the mess to clean up. My dad would have a cow if I used a torch on a hay machine inside a building, for fear of burning everything down. I would have done that outside also

It would have been easier to pull the plunger to work on it. There should have been shims behind knife to adjust clearance to stationary knife. I think your baler has bearing on the plunger which run on rails which are also adjustable. It could have wooden rails, don’t remember for sure. Clearance should be adjusted to thousands of an inch, think how scissors work. Fasten grease tube with zip strips, original would have been a steel line. Really enjoy young people learning and working on old iron. Keep up the good work.

I really enjoy your videos Evan. I like the fact that you are honest and don’t hide your mistakes which, by the way, are few. Thanks for this tutorial. I am thinking of buying an old bailer. Do you think it would be difficult to replace the bearings on the plunger and the feeder?

They don't make things like they used to. The old Machinery you can work on by yourself, nowadays the new stuff you have to take it into a shop. We used a hay baler similar to this when I was growing up.

Hey Evan. There is a setting for the tension on the clutch springs. You loosen the nuts until the springs are just loose, then tighten the nuts 1 1/2 turns. If the springs are too tight the clutch won’t slip if you pick up something solid.

Just fyi.... A zerk is a grease fitting. A zert is a nut zert. it is a threaded insert that is usually installed like a rivet into a frame rail or any place that you can not get a nut on the back side. Also, I really appreciate the videos. You have really inspired me to get outside and get to work. It's great that you live and learn and share your experiences to help us all. Thank you sir.

Lash that copper tubing to the shaft with a couple of zip ties, Evan. That will keep it from getting up into harm's way. I really like compression fittings. My preference are Swagelok brand, but they are expensive and difficult to find outside of industrial suppliers, so more often than not, all I can find in the auto parts stores are Imperial brand. They work, but not as well as Swagelok. Good maintenance on that old workhorse. It should be good for a few more thousand bales.

I've got a tool that uses a multi layer sanding disc that uses a angle grinder and it puts a 30 degree angle on my mower blades which looks like the angle that cutter is. It's called a yellow hornet. I bought it online from a company. As you slide the blade from one end to other it will put a nice edge on mower blade and could do the same for your application I'm sure

I could do that kind of stuff every day... if I wasn't in a hurry. Doing maintenance like that in the "off season" is the right way to do it. When trying to do stuff because you "have to have" the equipment running or doing something in the field is definitely no fun. It also makes a huge difference having the right tool(s) for the job.

I also have a haybine and the rollers decrease drying time also. Thanks your hard work making your videos have a great day.
