In this video I am putting springs in the movement, putting it back together, discussing the history of Japy Freres. The following gives you some of the history and how to date French Clocks per the NAWCC:

Many thanks for the video, I have a Japy Freres that needs springs, you have shown me exactly how to do it without a winder, the only video available anywhere, well done. You can fix the fly to its shaft with superglue, it works fine and makes it easier to handle the fly. I don't have a cleaner and use white spirit [turpentine substitute] with a small, stiff paint brush while the clock is fully assembled, spend enough time and it does the job. Dry it off with a hair dryer, then I oil with 5w-20 full synthetic car engine oil, cheap and far more pressure resistant than clock oil. It has no ash or wax and never glues up. I do all my clocks every 2 years, they will last forever. Tim.

You are quite welcome. Glad I could help out. I use 0W-20 fully synthetic motor oil. A quart will last a life time. I got way too many clocks to do every 2 years with my health issues and answering peoples questions and clocks that I still need to work on. Sounds like you have a good system down. Thanks for watching.

Roughly speaking, the first 17 1/2 minutes was shown on the other video. When you are doing a clock, other than a cuckoo clock, I have found to take even more pictures where the spring is or any other parts that might be a problem in your head. Hammering the cap of the main spring could cause damage, this is why I use a plastic screw driver end or a stick of wood. On the fan, I tighten it up by tapping like you did. The missing piece of brass is only to hold it in place and not let it move up or down as far as I can see. This movement will not adjust in the case because the little keyway to adjust the time will not allow it. If you washed the screw down the sink, just maybe the screw will be in the pee trap. All, in all, this was a great video and the things you had to do. God Bless. Thanks for the shout out at the end of the video.

Thanks for the feed back Mike. The first part of the video I made separately in another video which was entitled how to replace a spring. I took it from this video set. That way you can search for replacing a spring in you tube and you will find my video. To draw more customers. I did take more pictures working on this clock. I just didnt review my pictures. My mistake. But I have worked on enough of these clocks to figure it out in the end. The fan has since came loose. The pivot in the fan was bent. I tried straightening it out. I got it straighter than what it was but it is creating issues. Needs a new pivot but that pivot is extremely small. Needs someone with a lathe and micro drill bits. I have some small drill bits but my home made lathe with the two Dewalts wont fix this issue. I found a screw in my parts bin that works. This clock will probably just end up being a time only clock unless you feel like hitting on the clock to make the chimes work due to the bent pivot. Thanks for watching Mike. God Bless you and yours.

Just a comment it might be a better idea to lubricate the spring before you put it in the barrel. The tension makes it flow over the coils that are compressed on the edges of the barrel walls and it may leave dry coils? The springs also frequently come with a protective coating that should be wiped off before wiping on the lubrication with a rag all the way up to the interior coils, then a paper towel with lubrication can be worked into the inner coils. You do enough clock work that I hope you get a winder one day for the springs. Love your videos, may not be the most orthodox methods always, but always interesting and it looks like there isn't much you can't fix!

I oil a clock barrel spring both ways in my videos. I will use a napkin/rag with oil on it and wipe the springs. I tell people in one video that you can do it both ways. I learnt a lot of what I know from watching Bruce Rassumusseins (? spelling) on a VHS tape that I bought in 99 on General Clock Repair. I still have that VHS tape. You can buy it on DVD on ebay now. I might have to brush up. Thanks for watching, the kind words, and yes I have looked at purchasing or making a spring winder. If I did this for a living then I would have a long time ago but with as little as I do on my clocks then it doesnt justify the cost. I am sure the day I get careless and hurt myself then that is the first thing that I will get......
