Nice repair and great result. Not a trivial exercise! Great vid!

You know the one weakness of the 60D you purchased is that it doesn't have live auto-focus in video shooting like your camcorder does. I think autofocus is useful a lot of the time. The ability to go between manual and auto is even more useful. Although there is aftermarket firmware made for DSLR's to make them better for filming. I know professional TV productions which have used 5D Mk2 and Mk3's to film whole episodes. Believe it or not the 70D and 80D do have that function. In fact the 70D really is the "dogs bollocks" (English saying for really good). A lot of big name KZbinrs record all their stuff on 70D. The other thing that you can easily add shooting on DSLR is external hot shoe mounted micophone to improve audio quality. A lot of pro's use the Rode Videomic Pro or Videomic Go for that purpose. Don't send the 50mm lens back either. The aperture on that thing goes up to F1.8 which is huge, great for low light or shallow depth of field at that price. It is superior to the 18-55 kit lens you got. Almost no distortion on the 50mm either. The best thing to put the 50mm lens on is the full frame camera. 5D Mk2's have come down in price and there are also 6D's knocking around now second hand. I myself have a 5D Mk3 and a 500D. Lenses is what gets you with DSLR's. The cameras are less important to a degree You might want the EF-S 10-20mm lens if you start shooting on DSLR. Very wide angle. If you need a telephoto the 70-300mm lenses can be found cheap second hand. I have a EF-S 18-200mm lens i take with me on holiday for photography. I also have a F2.8 40mm pancake lens i use sometimes to save space when i take my camera some places. For low light and astrophotography at wide angle there is a F1.8 28mm lens or a Image Stabilized IS 24mm F2.8 lens that i use. The 28mm can be found pretty cheap. It isn't IS. Macro photography i like the F2.8 100mm macro lens. Although i think there is a 60mm made by someone else like Tamron which is good. If you ask me i think the Sony camcorders have the edge for value and production quality on the basis of "bang for buck" a bunch of the smaller automotive repair channels use them. I can see the attraction as well because they are relatively inexpensive and survive quite a beating and exposure to oil, brake clean and other crap. Nice repair.

Autofocus can also be really annoying. I'd love to be able to turn it OFF on mine.

I had the same problem, but before sending it to the service, I decided to try to move that pin a little bit with a small knife, without disassembly the body... and YEEEY, it's working perfectly now. I think in the future I will not remove the card from the device and I will transfer all the images through the USB cable to the PC (with all my cameras).

Clever fix, and a good score on the 60D for half price! The Canon 50mm lens is known in my circle of friends as "the plastic fantastic". It has very nice quality and is fast, but the fixed focal length is certainly a limiting factor.

nice video - 2 things - nobody has mentioned CHDK yet (if I am not mistaken). Canon Hacker's Development Kit. Basically lets you override many if not all setting and you can execute scripts. Intervalometer comes to mind with your new workshop project. You mentioned you had taken 150 GB of footage or so. I guess a lot of it is just hours of you stepping up and down a ladder painting the wall or something, so set the fixed focus with good lighting , take a pic every 4 seconds or so and you are good to go, just make it into a video. Another nice script is the lightning photography script. Basically takes the sport out of lightnings completely. Would surely work with welding and everything involving sparks. Take a picture if something (expectedly) blows up, sparks or something. The second thing is, there are very cheap brackets on ebay and amazon which connect to the tripod screw ('schraubzwinge' style). It allows you to attach the camera to a bookshelf or other board on the wall in your shop. It gives you the top-down perspective you see in so many cooking videos nowadays (bowl, put stuff in, chop onions, mix....). I could imagine it works for soldering, breadboards and the like. Have fun with the camera!

That 60D was a perfectly usable camera for tethered studio shooting, non-functional SD slot or otherwise; the same goes for that 20D. The light, composition and lens matter more than the body. Either way good job on the fix. If you really want to see how good your photos can look then Lightroom is worth the trouble.

Congrats on the new room then! Also, nice addition to your camera workforce :) BTW, the old CF cards (before flash memory became cheap and readily available in huge capacities) were actual micro drives, so you had an actual miniaturized hard drive with one, or I think sometimes even 2 platters in there!

Excited to find this video, there's a used 80D right now for dirt cheap because of a "faulty SD card slot" and the seller says it doesn't write images so it has to be used only by USB tether. If your hack applies to this camera I just found an upgraded camera body for less than I could get a 70D.

Hello, many thanks for your video, i've solded bypass and now i can again take photos. I can't even describe how much happy i am now. But there are two things which are not mentioned in video: 1) When you reassembly the top cover, on the bottom of display hinges are cutouts which have to be pressed under the hinges mount plastic cover, using screwdriver or plastic spatula (rather than screwdriver, you will not damage plastic cover of camera), otherwise the display will not correctly sit down when closed and pop out back. 2) When you disassembly the cover, small spring, which open the lid of card reader slot will pop out of its plastic stop and must be gently placed back using small pincette. For all of you, which will be disassembly 60D i have screws cheat sheet, using transparent double side ducktape can asure, that you will place all screws back correctly: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1sEAEifesKIrBbafmd7tP1EIlHck9QJx-

I also have a 60D that I've used for professional photography for the past 4 years. If you are interested I highly suggest you to take a look at Magic Lantern, I've been using it for 2 years and it's amazing! Great for taking still pictures with all the great features, but it's just the best experience I've ever had when making videos with it. The amount of flexibility and control it gives me is just great, also being able to have the mic levels and focus points all the time makes the camera even more powerful for the amount of money I've paid for it! I think you should definitely take a closer look into it.

For anyone thinking about following the advice and buying the Sony camcorder, it does not have an external microphone input, and the newer versions of it (YEARS newer) are only a few dollars more at $200 new. I'm sure it was great in its day but that day is done.

@ThePostApocalypticInventor8 жыл бұрын
The 50mm lense is certainly of better quality than the variable lense in this video, but I'd need a wide angle lense for most of my shots. I guess I will buy a couple of better lenses over time, but will use the variable lense for now.
@matooo958 жыл бұрын
Isn't it the stock Canon F/3.5 18-55mm lens? You should really get a better one, with lower F number and improved image quality. Lenses are usually more imporatant (in terms of image quality) than the camera bodys.
@nicktohzyu8 жыл бұрын
if you have good lighting you could use higher f number settings, so we can have a better field of view and less focusing problems

*****, yes but that is what a technician have to deal with normally. When you do not want to disassemble such devices, do not do the job. ;-) But I know what you mean. I have seen a video of someone desoldering the flash storage chip from his mobile phone's logic board. With a lighter. And then he soldered the new one on it and upgraded his phone from 16 to 128gb. I was scared a bit, too. But in comparison, what TPAI does here is way less dangerous.
