Those are called "potted modules". They typically make them that way in order to thermally match components which otherwise would be independent, although they were a precursor to ICs. Given this radio's vintage, it's unlikely they did that to miniaturize or save cost.

Interesting. They may use them for thermal matching now, but in 1949 I suspect they were to save cost and manufacturing time. These were extremely cheap, mass-produced radios, designed without a transformer to save money. No subtle thermal matching in a radio running five scorching hot tubes. :-)

@@vintageelectronicsrepair9206 when I saw it was just caps, I realized you're probably right. By the 60 and 70s, hi-fi sets were full of those things. I had an old Magnavox with a pile of them.
