Repairing a Numark CDN-88 Dual CD Player - how to

First off let me explain the hat i'm wearing in this video. That day happened to be the day Numark was having their summer company picnic and it was Hawaiian themed lol --- Here i am replacing 2 transports on a Numark CDN 88

@Kilmer1111 Possibly. it could also bee a blown capacitor on the power circuit board. You can find the circuit board behind the left side transport (cd player). Its it about 3 x 2 inches in size. You will have to look from the side to see the top of the capacitor. If the top of the capacitor is domed upwards, it means its blown out. You can replace just the capacitor, or order a whole new power circuit board from Numark. This blown capacitor is a common defect on most Numark CDN-88's.

@ILDJMike The capacitor does require soldering. there is only 2 wire leads on it so its easy to replace, and its marked which side is what. you could just get a matching cap at a place like radio shack for a few bucks. The voltage and farad rating is marked on the capacitor itself. If you did send it out for a full refurb make sure you mark all the PC boards with a marker or something so when you get it back you can see if the actually did change anything.

115v. but i believe there is a switch on the back that you can change between voltages depended on what country you live in.

Spray some cleaner in it, such as a contact cleaner or tuner cleaner. Or you may have to Replace the pitch control slider. They wear out over time. Numark should have this part available as it is used on many different products, and should be cheap. These sliders have 3 or 4 pins on each end that you will have to solder.

Hello KC, I have 3 Numark dual players. On the oldest one - CD5020 right transport unit loads and spins but I get an " E" code on the display. I have swapped the lasers with no change, so both lasers are good. What else besides recapping would you suggest ? J K

Thank you for posting this. I just checked with Numark & the transports are out of stock. They now (May 2011) cost $55 plus S&H, so about $61 in the US. Please provide more info on the capacitor. Does it just pull out & you plug in another one, or does it require soldering, etc.? Do you know a part # so we can find out the replacement cost? On Numark's site, they offer factory refurb CDN-88s (through "InMusic") for $199. Depending on cost of capacitor, that may be more economical.

I had a problem with the disks not reading on both sides, I cleaned both lenses with alcohol but to no avail, there is a slight burned smell on the inside, what else could it be??

Hmm not sure how that happened. Could you have possibly cracked the circuit board? Did you drop the controller? check the controller cables too. its could have a short. Swap the cables and see if the problem still happens.

i checked all cables, and i took it to a dj equipment repair shop down the street. they said that part of the board just died somehow. hopefully its not an expensive repair.

I may be wrong, but i thing the cables/plugs are the same as "S-video" cables?

i'm having a problem with the pitch control. The pitch is staying at 4.0% on the left side no matter which way i move the slide. Any way to fix this? thanks

I ordered 105C instead of 85C caps, I put them in anyway and no change, both decks don't read discs, whould this be the problem ??

I hear I have a problem with numark CDN88 channel 1 detects cds and plays well but after a while you hear the scratchy audio and how it could be fixed?

I'm not sure how to replace them. I worked at numark for about 2 years, and never once has a broken jog wheel shown up in the repair room. Must be a very rare thing.

Yes, it replaces the entire playing mechanism. Call Numark and order the "transport" for your model CD player. They are about $40.00. Easy to change out yourself. (as you can see in this video)

good news and bad news i fixed the tray problem, it can now read discs. but now 60% of the buttons dont work. how can i fix this? i didnt solder or anything so i know i didnt fry the circuit board. and i didnt take anything off.. what can i do?

I've switched out many transports when they get slow and drawers wont open. I've had 2 older units have the power supply go out causing everything to act up. Dim read outs, slow disc loading and sound is terrible.

Out of the 100;s of numark dual cd players i have fixed i have never seen this problem. I have no idea why it would be doing that, sorry.
