This session we repair an old 1940's AirCastle radio. It was purchased at an auction for $40 and was in not working condition even though it had been recapped and worked on by someone. We straighten out the mess and get it working again!

'm always amazed at your knowledge of electronic theory. As exclusively a cabinet restorer, I'll never get past a layman's level. Beautiful set and it sounds great. By the way, I too am often surprised at how a person will do so much resto work, but then leave out the simple, easy details that really make it look great. Those are so important.

Unfortunately, I live right in the middle of Houston Tx, a HUGE city! The bands are nothing but horrible noise from all the interference generated by the millions of noise generating devices in the area. Background noise runs about 100 uV. A friend who lives in a small town in the country has a background noise about 1 uV!

The problem with soldering that fuse in place is that if you sell the radio the new owner will have a time figuring out what's wrong when the fuse blows and he can't find it! (hidden by heat shrink). Would be more obvious if you installed a fuse holder.

Was adding the trimmer to the tuning capacitor to change the band the radio is good for? Otherwise why add it? What quality are the replacement capacitors? There is a lot of garbage knockoffs out there. When changing line cords, do you think it best to use polarized plugs these days to be sure the hot is switched? (especially for All American Fives with no power transformers and possibly hot chassis).

Yes, I don't really understand those who twist component leads around, so that removing and replacing components is made difficult. I was trained to fit components in a way that made removal easy, since they will stay in place if soldered properly.

Glassslinger do you still work on radios as far as someone sending it to you? I have a 1952 Zenith Symphomaile. It looks exactly like the Y83Z model. The model number Is unreadable on mine. Something odd is in the tuneing. Sometimes it will pick up FM but never AM. and sometimes the only way it will work at all is when I have it setting by another radio and somehow it tunes in with it and by using the tuneing dial on the other radio you can go up and down the dial and the Zenith will pick up the signal. Any knowledge on this problem be very appreciated.

Hello? I have 2 questions, First what would you rather work on tube type or solid state? Years ago i use to be in to CB radios hot and heavy, I talked all over the world on just a 12 meter band CH radio BUT i always had a linear amplifier hooked in line And always 500W or bigger And the tube type was much clearer this the solid state people told me..... Next question can just a coil and a magnet make AC power? I really enjoy all your video and I'm very impressed with your knowledge And work!! God Bless you miss.

Though a repeat of an earlier comment....I've been considering on building a small multi channel transmitter for both short and broadcast bands for around the house. Something that will offer me 4-6 channels using old internet connected cell phones for inputs...giving the illusion of something to tune to on my collection of antiques....Any thoughts Ron?

I think it will be more complicated than you first think. I have had the same basic idea but using a small embedded computer to store the sound files and handle the audio channel feeds to the transmitter. It will certainly be a challenging design project!

Just wondering, Ron: 1) Did you need to tune the RF or was it close enough? 2) Will you leave a note inside to let the next owner know about the broken feedback coil? and 3) Did you clean the speaker cone while you had the speaker out? 😉

This was made by Sentinel and is the same chassis as the model 5700B. I've got one, the candohm resistor was completely open on mine, and it had the original 2.5v tubes. I fixed it up and it plays okay, but it was a very cheap radio when new and sensitivity and sound quality is just so-so. Nice looking cabinet though.

How about doing a video of how the Watt meter/electronic fuse was made and the circuit diagram so that we who have similar interests can make one for ourselves, please? I would be VERY interested in making myself one for use with the radios I restore. I have restored an AC-powered radio and I have two more to do for myself, the first one kept popping the mains breaker when I switched it on and there was all hell to pay with putting the house in darkness!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video on making the Watt meter/electronic fuse with the circuit diagram, if for no other reason than to save my life from my family killing me every time I pop the mains AC breaker when I am working on these old radios!!!!
