1) remove all dead strands 2) do not increase size of wound 3)Use rounded tip of knife to clean sides of wound 4) aim for an oval wound shape 5) do not cut further into "white" layer 6) aim to remove and "pockets" in trunk as it will lead to further rotting 7) damage closer to ground of tree higher risk of rotting (clean thoroughly)

To prevent this twist a piece of scrap bark wire or any thin wire loosly around the trunk until about waste high. Or put heavy duty foil around the trunk. There are nerves in living antlers exactly like our teeth. One bite of foil you will understand. 59 years of orchard experience.

Use a 3 foot piece of "Barb" wire or "any"wire as long as it's flexible and metal to irritate their nerves in the living antler tissue. Just twist it loosely around the trunk each autumn before the velvet scraping and rutting season. Man I really wish I could turn off the annoying spell checker on youtube. I've used that all my life. It works.

Human remedy for problem tree had already evolved a solution for. This is not "Tracing" method which has fallen out of favor. And it's damaged trunk had any possible open pocket damage removed. A little extreme, but nice job preparing phloem wounds edges which will react with air and kick in compartmentalization growth. Here in Chicago where EAB is causing Ash tree extinction, the previous years borer gallery damage causes same kind of wounding down to Cambium during their fourth instar stage. One tree I treated for owner recovered from trunk wounding the size of two basket balls with production of whole new tissue layers and fresh bark. _Keep up good work Bradley._ Scottie Ashtree seed.

Interesting techniques but I’m afraid the tree won’t likely be able to compartmentalize the decay from a wound that large. It’s been a few years can we see a follow up?

my rabbits all but completely girdled my loquat tree there is about 10% bark still remaining in a sliver of it where they did not complete the "full circle" girdle. do I have a chance of saving this tree?

I haven't used it but you might look into a product called tree bandage
