@tryally3 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy, so, all cutters have now a small radius in the cut tip, near 0.20 mm for better finishes, other of them, are spherical like in this video, so the radius on the tip is half of the tool width, they bring a great result

Interesting video, I like your videos! I am starting with sherline lathe and mill and I am planning to make them cnc. For the lthe do you recommend to change x and z axis to cnc and also the spindle? I noticed you are doing threading on a different machine that has only the spindle is stepper and connected with the thread cutting gears to the slide? Can I combine all as I only have one lathe not two :)
@tryally Жыл бұрын
You could even combine them, but I think it would be a lot of work. I only did it this way because I have other lathes. But with the CNC system you can cut threads, you just need a few modifications and a turn counter (infrared sensor).
@buundy Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Why do you think it would be hard to combine all? Here is my plan: a strong stepper motor to drive the spindle and two normal steppers to drive the z and x axes. Stepper drivers connected to an usb mach 3 adapter board and configure mach 3 to run the spindle and the other two axes. Do you think it would be possible? That was I would know (and sense) the exact rpm of the spindle if I want to cut threads. Any thoughts?
@tryally Жыл бұрын
@@buundy Even though the stepper motor is strong, it doesn't offer the right speed for the spindle, DC motors can reach up to six thousand rpm and stepper motors at a maximum of three thousand rpm, if I'm not mistaken. But with the CNC system and an rpm sensor you won't need a stepper motor.
@buundy Жыл бұрын
Yes but I think that for slow and steady motoric threading the stock Sherline spindle motor would be weak. Do you suggest to replace it with a more powerful motor? Also about the stepper spindle: what materials would need higher rpm than 2500-3000? I plan to mostly machine aluminium, steel, maybe brass sometimes.
@tryally Жыл бұрын
@@buundy A stronger motor is always better, but it also works well with the standard motor and hold up well. The rpm depends solely on the diameter of the part you are machining. For example, for smaller diameters, higher rpm, for larger diameters lower rpm. You should use this ratio for any material, and over time you will learn this by intuition.
