Thanks so much for this video Eric. I’ve been having ratchet issues for a while and finally stumped up the courage to prise the covers off and see what was going on. The springs and ratchets were fine but gummed up with residue from lube and dirt. A blast out with silicone lube and they’re back together and ratcheting beautifully. Working on old analogue bikes and parts is a joy, isn’t it? Peace and love from Liverpool, UK.

This was fascinating, Eric. If I understood this correctly, the purpose of the ratchet is to virtually eliminate any friction inside the shifter when cable is being pulled, so that the rider only needs to counteract the tension from the derailleur's spring. When cable is released, the ratchet is locked and thus the combination of the derailleur's spring and the rider's fingers need to overcome the friction inside the shifter. Did I get it right? It's a clever improvement over a basic friction shifter.

I wonder if a clear plastic bag could help in containing the spring disassembly and reassembly loss risks? Or perhaps placing a strong magnet nearby during spring disassembly? The link to more springs was a key bit of information. Thanks!

Yeah, a plastic bag could do it. I've got the process down but I did keep a magnet close by on an early attempt and when the spring flew out and the magnet grabbed it.

It is nice to see that you haven't been led astray by the latest trend in carbon fibre clones. Good to see you keeping old stock alive and serviceable. 👍..

I must admit that I think most modern bikes are just ugly as hell and that's a big factor keeping me away, I don't like the shapes of the frames and the look of the components. Just not for me! It is nice that a lot of the older tech and things like friction shifting have a lot of backwards and cross compatibility and they are serviceable with a little extra effort :0) I like that you can pair some new Dia Compe friction shifters to a very old derailer

When I have rehabbed Suntour Sprints in the past, I drilled out the brass pin holding the cover in place, then put in a new bit of brass rod (I think it was around 1/8") and peened it to lock in the cover.

Great vid Eric, thanks! Have you ever repaired the shifter pod itself? I had one that wouldn’t engage into the handlebar
@ericmarth8 ай бұрын
Thanks! Not yet, fortunately I haven't had any trouble with the pods. But I do know that the pod mount deal does come free from the pod so it can be replaced if needed and potentially rebuilt.

Hey RICK, sorry I missed this. I did do the "Haute Dog" ride which was pretty damn fun. And some blooping around to check out the finest decaf lattes and flaky pastries on Sunday morning before I left Philly

Excellent Eric, this reminds me that I have some old silver 1's in the parts bin that i thought were toast, time to fix them up. Did you make those screwdriver handles? See you in philly
@ericmarth9 ай бұрын
Thanks Stephen. The screwdrivers are from a German brand called Felo, I bought them new and refinished the handles.

nice video, haven’t seen anything like this on these shifters. I do have a tip for the next video about things like this. Use a much more closeup view, it makes it more interesting and logical for viewers.

Thanks! Great idea on the close-up coverage. I struggle with focus and camera rigging for that kind of thing but you're right!

@@ericmarth I understand, advising someone is eazy ;-). Most recording devices have some sort of focus lock. Rigging is another story specially when your not planning to do heaps of these tutorials. Anyway, whatever you do I'll be watching it my Dutch lookin' vriend. ;-)

Quite disappointed in the silver shifters tbh. I’ve obtained one and it’s developed rust quickly.
