This is very cool. But is it possible to do the same with a vector shape, not bitmap?
@EbolaStew3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, AD does not have a true Vector Brush tool. They call it a Vector brush which makes you think it is vector, but, alas, the only Vector part is the spline you apply the brush to. Head over to the Forum and register your request there. There are other posts requesting this and, hopefully, this will be added soon.

Not too familiar with Affinity yet, but I'm wondering if you could select the entire circular pattern and use the convert to curves button to vectorize the pattern. I know this doesn't make the brush a vector brush, but it would make the object made with the brush a vector object.
@EbolaStew3 ай бұрын
@@jekalambert9412 Well, it already is "vector" in the sense that you seem to be saying. The basic problem is that it is a raster image tiled or stretched along a vector path. What you suggest would not convert the pixels to vector shapes. This is a point of needed improvement and we need to keep requesting that on their forum.

You can also make the spiral object using Spiral Tool ("Use Cusped Segment" setting), and adjust the turns accordingly. The best part of it is, obviously, you can tweak the line's width as your heart's delight.

Going to grab that course you have as well. Thanks for all you do. Really appreciate it. Also, would love to see a master class tutorial on Affinity Photo if that’s something you are thinking about doing.

I thought they already did? Don't use a lot of brush effect.. But I thought they added a vector paint brush... Correct me if I'm wrong.. Haven't played with it much..
@kevinhouse714310 ай бұрын
Some brushes like the basic brushes are vector. Most others that have an artistic look to them are usually png images mapped onto a path, just as in this video. One way to tell is to draw a path either with the pen, pencil or vector brush tool, assign a brush to it then zoom in on the path. Depending on the resolution of the png image you may or may not see pixels. Also if you try to outline the path by going to Layer > Expand Stroke, if it's true vector your path will expand into a filled in vector stroke path with actual nodes. If it's not vector Expand Stroke will have no effect. @@neodidi See also someone elses comment below.

@@kevinhouse7143 got it.. Got it.. I think I was mistaking the vector paint bucket or vector fill tool.. My workflow with affinity, mostly logo, mockups, websites and UI really haven't required me to use a vector brush.. But I find it interesting when creating patterns and backgrounds which I'd like to try.. So pls, what use is a vector brush for patterns? The new enter key distribution action helps create some interesting designs and patterns... And you can make the design a symbol so a change would affect everything. Kindly let me know what use case that might come in handy.. Thanks

This is one of the biggest missing features of Affinity Designer right now. I use Vectorstyler for things like this now because it does offer 100% vector brushes

Loved the pattern and can see so many possibilities with this technique. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I learned from a tutorial on another channel that Affinity default for maximum brush size is 100, but you can type in any size greater than 100 in the dialogue box to the right of the brush size slider.

At your previous video regarding how to make custom brushes in Affinity, you said that in order to change the color of the stroke, we have to go to New Adjustments and Recolor, while in this one you just change the brush stroke color and the color changes. Could you explain why this happens?

@@simonadouglas I used warp + rotate, but it's very hard to get it to do anything, vectors along paths... aligning nodes to paths... snap handles to parallel path (for follow lines), effectors... a lot that could be added to this app, it's awesome, but ... so many ideas!

Question : You have two open canvases/windows docked together. One open and one hidden. Can you copy 'by dragging' a vector element from one open window/canvas to the other docked canvas window... without copy-paste? You can do this in illustrator... just drag the element up to the other docked canvases 'name-tab bar' and the window will switch over, to the other canvas ... you can then drop the element into that now open window ( if there's an open layer free ) Can Affinity do this?

I am trying to do the same with just simple squares, however, as a brush, it will not create spaces in between. In the end, it just looks like one fat line. This video doesn't really show 'objects' along a path, it shows how to create a custom brush stroke. It is helpful, but it does not apply to objects, and in fact it distorts the original design. You can see this as it approaches the inner part of the circle. What I want is just individual squares, going along a circle or a spiral. Any advice?

I am just wondering, am I the only one here who can see that we are getting not the same shape being repeated along the line, but the INVERSION of it? It took me a while to see that (after several attempts to create my own brash and failing no matter what). The black becomes transparent, the white becomes the tip/nozzle of the brush. (You can also see this if you look at the thumbnail for this video and compare the original shape and the shapes arranged in the circle...

it's a real shame this cannot be done as a vector, I almost got it, but the "text effects" are done as percentages of 180* not as degrees themselves, else it's almost possible to use warp + degrees to do this. pnging this is just ... sad. :/
