All car repair videos need to be like this. Simple and to the point, all the fiddling edited out or sped up, great camera work and just enough explanation as you went. Thanks so much!

This really was a A+ how to video! I changed the rear brakes on my 2007 VW Jetta. The part that took the longest was just getting the bolts off of the brakes. I was able to get the special tool to compress the piston at my local O'Rileys for 55$. They return your money once they get the tool back. Great video was able to do both brakes in about hour and a half and it was my first time!

Dude! Thank you so much! I have a 2007 I bought for my daughter, and replaced the front ones. I looked for videos for the rear, and this is the only video that was straight foward simple and easy and not intimidating.

Just watched your video, then ran to Advance Auto Parts to borrow the tool to compress the piston. Have to admit it was one of the easier brake jobs I have ever done. This video saved me about half a day of trying to noodle it out myself. Many thanks. JohnR

Good video one suggestion I might add recently I watched a video where the bleeder valve on the caliper was cracked open with a hose attached and brake fluid was allowed to bleed into a container as you are compressing the caliper this helped from the caliper piston seal from leaking because of extra pressure put on it. If you don't do this method then I usually uncap the brake reservoir lid and if brake fluid had been added before the brakes are changed then you can take a little out of the Brake Reservoir before you compress the Piston this will help from spraying it onto the ground from the reservoir. You can always add it back later when finished.

Crack the bleeder and clamp the caliper hose with an approved tool. Pushing brake fuid back to the master cylinder is asking for trouble. Antilock brake sysrems don't like dirty fluid. By the time the rear brakes go on a Jetta it is probably about time to flush the brake fluid anyhow. One man flush or bleeding is easy. Crack the bleeder with a hose attchached whose free end is dipped into a container of clean brake fluid. Pump the brakes and keep the master cylinder topped off.

Helpful hint,you don,t have to go out and buy harbor freight tool use large C-CLamp and channel locks to turn piston at the same time closing c-clamp down but use a large zip tie to keep rubber boot away from channel locks -just did the pad swap out over the week end-zone worries......

Awesome video I had a park Ave that needed a special tool also
@gerrys62652 жыл бұрын
You don't actually need a special tool to back off the piston. I have done several where I JUST USE a couple of screw drivers, put a piece of tie wire around them to keep them the right distance apart and put another screwdriver or bar between them and turn...can be a bit of a pain when still on the car, but easy enough.....also can turn it with a pair of channel locks (be careful not to tear the boot!).

Very helpful, thanks. I don't have the tool for turning the piston. I ended up using a modified wheel puller/pusher and turned the piston with a monkey/pipe wrench. I would have replaced the caliper if I hadn't seen this video. Thank again. And you don't need a new camera man, Tsar Khan was wearing angry pants the day he wrote that.

Good video, love that it's just the nitty gritty. My only suggestion would be to at least point out the importance of cleaning the contact surfaces and doing proper lubrication while you are in there. Nice Job.

Your brakes can, and will, rust, seize and lock up if you don't carefully clean and flatten and grease all metal to metal movement points.
@karlbennettjr77989 жыл бұрын
Nice video, I would advise that you use jack stands, not a good idea to use a jack to hold the vehicle up. Turn your rotors @ an O'Reilly or other parts store, you would be able to enjoy longer service life out of the brake pads

If you have a clamp you can apply pressure with it while using a channel lock to turn it, just turn the clamp as you turn the wrench. It's easiest with two people.
@ChrisFaulkner3 жыл бұрын
only problem with that is, you can goob up the piston or the rubber boot. sure you can do this in a pinch but you have to be real careful

Error: My brakes seize if I don't carefully clean up, flatten, and use special brake grease on all the moving metal to metal surfaces. It's important.

Hello! Thanks for sharing, its a great video, with great details explained step by step. I have some questions regarding a Passat B5.5: 1) do i also have to spin back the caliper ? it has the same notches on the piston, but the car doesn't have parking brake integrated. 2) for the front pistons, as you said in the video there's no need to spin back - just press it, is it correct ? Thanks! :)
@stoppedsnoring6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I'd *think* if you have the notches, you'll have to spin it back, but who knows maybe they use the same parts for all.
@timurg33778 жыл бұрын
The compression tool looks like it fell right in place, but I don't like how it's spinning the piston, contorting the dust boot. What I do is put the old pad back against the piston, throw a c-clamp over the pad and the back of the caliper and then tighten as needed. No spinning piston this way.
@stoppedsnoring8 жыл бұрын
Good tip!
@timurg33778 жыл бұрын
Ok, a very important update to my comment. I learned the hard way today that the rear brake caliper pistons on these vehicles CANNOT be compressed with just a c-clamp. They need to be turned clockwise as seen in this video. The c-clamp method does work on the front calipers because there's no parking brake. The rear caliper refused to go in, and as I continued tightening the cheap, Chinese c-clamp it snapped in half. I even cracked open the bleeder valve to see if that would allow the piston to go in, but it didn't even budge. I felt mechanical resistance. Well, it turns out that this has to do with the parking brake self adjusting mechanism. As the pads are wearing down this mechanism spins itself off the piston which sticks it further out. That's why the piston needs to be spun back onto that internal self-adjusting mechanism. I didn't have the tool but was able to spin it on with channellock pliers, though it took me 20 minutes of cursing to get it in.
@electronicspark110 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that.I need to change my pads and didn't know if there is anything special about it. As far as squeezing the piston back you can use a regular c clamp.
@lennonpolo10 жыл бұрын
You can't for the rear! Only for the front.

my 2006 vw passat has 3 triangular grooves and so far none of the brake wind back tool caliper comes with those 3 tips. what else can I do?
@johncooper62469 жыл бұрын
This tool used to collapse the caliper, is it required for an even action in return? Can one not use a C clamp to do the same job, thoughts? Thank you.
@timurg33778 жыл бұрын
CANNOT, it must be spun back onto to the parking brake internal self-adjust mechanism
@paul299614 жыл бұрын
It helps to loosen the bleed nipple. Everyone fast forwards the compression of the cylinder because it is a real dog of a job.
