Replace Bike Tires: 1970's Schwinn Continental

So my brother buys an old Schwinn at a garage sale - and he really needs to replace the bicycle tires. The back is probably original (and in the worst shape), the front seems to be a replacement rim (and tire) - but also in sad shape. John tackles the back tire first, which is a little more involved to remove, and then tackles the front.
If you only need to replace one tire on your Schwinn Continental, you'll really only need to watch one half of the video. John also says most racing bikes are built in a similar fashion, so hopefully this video helps more than just old school Schwinn cyclists. I just did two schwinn approved tires like yours. Theyre made in china and wound up inside a box. They lacked everything that schwinn used to stand for. The new Schwinn innertubes were about 2 inches too big. I wound up using lots of talc( now corn starch) to make the tubes slide into place with less problems. What a major headache compared to the 1970s tires and tubes. The only thing they had in common were the colors.

Yeah, we feel your pain. It drives us nuts that barely anything is made in the US and quality is beyond sub par. We try whenever possible to buy US produced, but it's not easy in a lot of cases.

That rear tire is not even close to being seated..Shwinn steel rims are real difficult to seat..my aproach is soapy water and inflate it slowly..not advised to put more than 60-70 psi max..

We agree, this was not so simple and perfect, especially with no-brand tires coming from China. Thanks for sharing your approach, which is definitely great advice! Thankfully, Paul is happy with the outcome of his tire replacement - and he's biking around town without issue. We're hoping it stays that way!

i switched from 27 to 700,, only about 3/8" diff so the brake pads worked on the 700s
