Replace Proton Wira Rear Hub and Bearing.

Derek, I noted these two days, on my 1996 Iswara sedan, a tiny amount of grease was seeping out of my rear left (passenger side) plastic hub cap. My brother-in-law, and my mechanic as well, told me it doesn't really matter, and to leave it alone. They said, the metal hub cap inside was maybe a little dented along the perimeter, so a little grease (swiped there by the previous mechanic) was seeping out. They said the bearing, like that shown in your assembly, was sealed with its own lubrication inside, and grease was not really needed on the exterior. I noted you did not even swipe any grease on the exterior of the bearing, as well as its lock nut. You seem to be very professional and experienced. Most mechanics tend to swipe lots of grease there, then cover with the metal cap.

Yeah because the purpose of the grease there is to not let the lock nut to be seize onto the thread. Most of the grease is in the cap itself. Thanks for the compliment but i do this as my side hobby.

Hi bro. Saya pakai wira 1.5 se aeroback belakang guna brake drum. Nak tanya : 1. Bila mula jalan bunyi mcm besi begesel(mcm bunyi brake disc tak rata bila tekan brake) di bahagian tayar belakang belah kiri. Lepas jalan bape meter baru ok. Biasa jadi masa pagi nak bergerak 2. Di bahagian yang same bila bawak slow ada bunyi. Bukan bunyi bearing sebab sy bawak 100+ bunyi berdengung takde tp bunyi something tu ada. Dibahagian sama juga bearing sudah tukar 2 kali dalam masa 4 tahun.. Bahagian kanan belum pernah tukar

Bunyi besi gesel biasa punca dari rear arm link atau tulang anjing. Kalau ada modal tukar sekali lower arm.

How to detect if the hub is damage?on driving loud cracky sound heard & new brake pump burst out oil? Sos,please let me know as soon as possible.

Normally the hub wont damage. If bearing damage will come out loud humming noise when driving. If cracky sound and damage your brake pump need to check the whole assembly.

Derek, is the hub/bearing unit the same in the Iswara ? In another video on the Iswara here, the hub seemed to be a permanent part of the drum - he took out the whole drum with the hub attached. Then he hammered the bearing out, and replaced that only. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4HTknR4grB1qa8

Should be different because the suspension type on wira and iswara is not the same.

@@DerrikLeow Thanks for the good information, Derek. Looking at the videos on the Iswara again, unlike the Wira, the bearings are separate from the hub mounting, They are exposed and not sealed like those of their Wira in their mounting. I think that is why in the Iswara videos, they swipe grease on the bearings, as well as around the insides of their cones in the hub, which is permanently fixed in the inside of the drum. Might that mean that the grease is important in this case, and if it seeps out, the bearings will seize ? I live in PJ, and do not really know the mechanics or tyre people here. My usual mechanic is in Kepong, since I had known him years before I moved here. But driving there is a hassle, heavy traffic jams, high petrol costs. Anyway, today I happened to phone a tyre man in PJ here. He said he must check it out, or else the bearings will fail without grease. But as mentioned, I am not familiar with the repairmen here, and am a bit hesitant to see him, not being sure of his service and charges. (You know PJ, everything is expensive.) ( I have being jobless with no income for some years. ) I was even thinking of taking out the tire and maybe replacing the cap myself, DIY like you. But the land where my garage is, is sloped about 30 degrees downwards, difficult, shaky and risky to place a jack there. I am also aging, not young like you anymore during the 1980s. I wonder if I can even twist free the wheel nuts, then lift the tire to take it out and place in again. If you might think it could be left alone, you could save me some money. Thanks again, Derek.

@@ThamMalaysia the bearing will show signs of failure before seizing. Most common symptoms is humming sound at high speed (around 50km/h above). The bearing wont suddenly seize. Personally I will just leave it alone.

@@DerrikLeow Thanks, Derrik. I will just leave it alone then. What I was trying to ask was, hopefully the minor grease leak won't affect the bearing's efficiency, and since it is also supposed to help keep water from entering thru the metal cap, water will not seep in. I phoned the mechanic in Kepong again. He said he has seen this in many customers' cars, and they just don't bother. He told me it is nothing and to leave it alone.
