Here we show how to replace the battery in an Audi new style key fob with a fresh one adding changes to how we handle a new battery. This fob was introduced in 2017 and like the older fob style it features a clever drawer that holds the battery, so we won't need a single tool.
Models covered include the A5 and Q5.

The instructions in this video are excellent. Much clearer than Audi's own online instructions. I will say that I had one hell of a time prying the battery drawer out of the key fob (on both key fobs). Took me quite a while and a lot of wiggling the drawer back and forth, not to mention two sore thumbs and a broken fingernail. I didn't dare use a tool, such as needle nose pliers, for fear of breaking the fob! I did finally get the old battery out.

Glad to help and sorry the drawer was tough to remove. I don't recall that it gave us much trouble, and you were right to avoid using tools. Better to struggle than damage.

@@DashboardSymbols I guess I was just "lucky." No problem in my previous Audi, a 2013 A8L, but these two in the 2018 SQ5 seemed kind of gummed up. What should have been a 5 minute job ended up around 45 minutes, including resting my fingers. Well, fixed now. Thanks again for the instructional video and for confirming my decision not to use a tool.

Not too difficult, but the drawer did need to wiggled a bit. Much easier than most fobs...

I replaced the battery but still got the warning message when I left the house this morning. Is that something I can reset or is the dealership going to need to?

Well, I would first make sure the battery is installed properly with the backing removed. If these are as they should be, I would then lock and unlock the car with the mechanical key to see it resets. You have likely been forced to do this already, however. After this, your dealer or a great locksmith is in play.

Same here. Still got the warning whenever I start up the car but the remote itself works fine.

Replaced both batteries today and now they are both completely dead. I am guessing there is no reprogramming needed? I think I just got a bad batch of batteries.

No reprogramming, but is there any life in the start battery?? Can you get an interior light? Anything? A bad batch of watch batteries is possible, but unlikely...

Thanks, a very comprehensive and clear video. Thanks for mentioning the backing on some batteries; mine was Duracell and had a backing which looked like part of the metal, so I never thought to remove it. Although I managed to start the car, I was unable lock it. Removed the thin film backing and everything works!
