This makes it look much easier than I was thinking, going to try to do it myself, starter alone is $150. can't imagine what the shop would charge me for labor.

If you know a guy, take it off and have your guy fix it, usually just needs brushes. Most starters I have seen are meant to be fixed. Other than that, name brand reliability if price is no concern

You need: -12mm shallow on a 1/4 ratchet for the power wire -14mm deep on a 3/8 ratchet for the bottom starter bolt -14mm shallow on a 3/8 flex ratchet for the upoer starter bolt.

Got my starter on order, and going to try this with the vehicle still on the ground. I'm planning on trying it with the front passenger side wheel removed, and the vehicle up on a jack-stand. I'll let you know how it goes!

So how did it go. I will need to do the same thing
@rbwannasee
@rbwannasee 2 жыл бұрын
@@missilemike2361 Hi Mike. It was pretty straightforward, and I took my time and got it done in a morning. In the end I didn't remove the wheel, and you can do it with the vehicle on ramps while working from beneath only. The lower bolt that goes from the rear of the vehicle to the starter through the transmission housing comes out real easy, as the head is unobstructed. The upper bolt that goes through the starter flange and screws into the transmission housing from the opposite direction (front to back) needs an extension and there's just barely enough room to get a click or two on your ratchet. They're both 14mm by the way. Oh yeah, pull the wire harness down to get it out the way once you remove the bottom bolt and wire harness bracket. At this point push the starter away from the hole, and remove the shim/heatshield looking thing. The tricky bit is the main electrical connector on the solenoid (the relay wire just pulls apart). The way I tackled that was to roll the starter on its side to be able to get a wrench on it - 13mm if memory serves. To get the starter out you have to roll, angle, and wiggle it a fair bit, but it eventually will fit between the engine/transmission and the two hard lines that are clamp mounted just above the oil drain plug. So yeah, I got it to pass between those, and removed it by going toward the rear of the vehicle. I put the new one in through the same gap the old one came out, and put the shim/heatshield thing back in place before I forgot it, and then tackled the electrical connector. This time was trickier because of the insulating rubber boot that gets in your way, and needing to get a socket on it to do a good tightening job - I found a trick though... I cut off the rubber boot (to maybe put back on at next oil change time with a ziptie??) and rolled the starter on it's side like before, but this time I used a long extension and you can tighten it nicely by going through the gap between the bottom of the radiator and the frame. Shine a flash-light into the work area, and you'll see the terminal. I loaded the nut and spring washer into the socket first, and held them in place with a couple of small pieces of tape until it got started. After it's tightened, rotate the starter back into its proper position. Make sure you don't trap any wires. My new starter relay wire was harder to get routed than the original, but just keep an eye on it as you rotate the starter back. Finally, just line everything back up, start the bolts by hand (not super easy 'coz of the shim/heatshield!), and tighten them down to 30ft.lbs (~25 to 35) each. I disconnected both battery terminals before I started, and I found it helped to pull the plastic wire harness mount out of the hole just above the oil pan. I was pretty pleased I didn't need to pull off any other parts, and after I reconnected everything she started first time. Good luck!

Thanks for this tutorial. I found the space was so tight that I had to also remove the nut off negative terminal as well. I could not remove the old one or install the new one without doing this and I literally spent an hour trying to twist it into place. Once I removed that nut it slipped right in.
