The "power button" is just a "clear" button. The sliding switch is a "lock" to prevent you from accidentally pressing the erase button. The table actually does NOT use up any battery power, only when you push the "Clear" button, to reset the LCD crystals to blank the screen.

Looking for something similar but I would need the ability to selectively erase, not just erase the whole board. Any suggestions?

Use high quality, lint free fibre cloths. The cheap ones leave scratches, esp visible on black plastic.

So, other than price comparison, how does this compare to using a whiteboard? I've seen this sort of thing in office supply stores, and I'm trying to figure out what this would do that my whiteboard doesn't.

It does nothing more. Its a replacement for a whiteboard. Its for those that are deciding if they want a whiteboard or one of these. I went this route. Just seems more practical. I use it everyday, jotting notes for what i need to do throughout my day.
