Replace Your Own UPVC Door Hinges and Save £££

Is your door catching when you open or close it? Has it dropped in the frame? My door is really old and really heavy, but replacing the existing Butt Hinges with new Flag Hinges has given it a totally new lease of life! This video shows you how I completed the task in just 3 hours with occasional help from a friend and no specialist tools. I saved hundreds on this project and you can too!

Just DIY tip when offering up your door for marking, stick packets in the rebate of the door, then put your door in place,.Then mark the position of the hinges. Afterwards you can remove the packers

I have recently done this on my rear patio doors and managed to use a over of timber and a car jack to level the door and replace the hinges whilst in situ. I'm giving to do the front uPVC for this weekend with the same technique, fingers crossed 😃🤞👍

Great vid maybe hinges on door could have been drilled and screwed when it was perfectly in place rather than marking and removing then hanging back on again. Love this vid 👍👍

Superb. I opened up the hinges on my patio doors that require adjustment and found that I cannot adjust them left or right at all as the hinges have been incorrectly fitted in the first place - all four adjustment holes have large screws directly into the doors!! I will try to correct them. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.

Hi, great video and a great job with the door 😃 Nick, you might have just saved me from utter despair at what to do with my 20+ year old upvc french doors with old style rebatted butt hinges that ave dropped and the hinges have no vertical adjustment (so similar to your originals but with a 'leaf' that sits on the internal rebate of the door). I've had the local repair chap out, we've changed the broken hinges but I'm still stuck with a 5mm gap on one door. So I'm looking into if I can replace the old hinges with a better option. Hopefully to get a few more years out of the doors before I have to swap them out. Some questions... 1) Since fitting have the hinges held true and kept the door in alignment, besides minor adjustment? 2) Does the flag part of the hinges come in different lengths, if so how did you ascertain the correct size? 3) I take it you used the packers in the door frame to ensure the door was sitting square in the frame before marking where to drill the fixings for the flag parts of the hinges? Thanks so much. Glad the video was of help. I found the hinges I describe in this video have worked perfectly well with a really heavy old door. Yes, packers can help and offer more adjustment to the hinges. Since fitting them, I’ve tweaked them a couple of times, as they are fitted to a timber building which does move with extreme heat/wet weather, but they are so much better than those originally fitted.

Hi Nick, thx for the video, I have a question pls: My (vague) understanding of flag hinges is that they are to be used with inward opening doors, as they could be too easy to unmount from the outside... But I see that you fit flag hinges on an outward opening door. Would you say that this installation is "not-so-skilled-burglar proof", unlike what I thought ???

Quick Q: when fitted, do these hinges allow you to lift the door off (as they are Flag hinges), as this would be excellent during times of frequent access (thinking of fixing my 'dropped' back doors, so bar-b-q's, etc.)?

Yes. You just need to loosen the little grub screw on each hinge with an Allen key to release them and the door will lift straight up and off. 👍

you ask for a local double glazing to fix front door hinge and they will tell you change the whole thing for money you dont have. Hardly any honest tradesmen left nowadays.
