My job sent a pipefitter to replace a 3 phase motor instead of giving me the hours. Half way on my 90min drive home I got a call from the fitter "it's just a bunch of yellow wires, I don't know how to wire this" I almost died laughing hanging the phone up. Didn't know how you was gonna get that motor over the AHU, nicely done under the duct. Thanks for the video.

So, do you actually put an oscope on all three feeds to determine exact phase or do you just hook it up any way and if it doesnt spin, you flip any two wires?

I cannot tell how wide the space is under the duct, but perhaps a Harbor Freight furniture dolly would help on occasion. You guys really get in some tight spaces.

2:27 to get that motor down the stairs I'd probably choose one of these options: 1) kick it down and pick up the parts down below 2) put a strong bar tied to those rails and use a rope to slowly get it down and do the reverse to bring the new one up

We used small shackles through the shaft end lifting ring and base mounting hole connected to a short lifting loop strap. We carried it down shaft up one step at a time , me and Joe 👍

@@subcoolHVAC this works fine on lighter motors but man that is heavy AF... You guys need to take care of yourself so y'all don't get a back injury. I've been watching you for quite a while. Keep on with the good work 👏🏻

Yep, that’s the largest motor in that ahu room . Hopefully that’s the last time I replace it. Thanks for the comments!

That is the most absurdly dangerous set of stairs I have ever seen,you have to wonder what people are thinking sometimes,..good grief! 🙄🙄

Switch to using Polaris connectors, my brotha. We aren't allowed by company policy to use wire nuts on anything bigger than 5hp. Is that on a drive or across the line voltage. Great video as always

Its an old across line starter, If done correctly wire nuts still work. I use polaris on larger motors but it’s not a policy where I work on these. I appreciate your skills 👍

@subcoolHVAC i get it with the wire nuts....but nothing beats a Polaris connector for safety and they promote a better contact patch for the wires. Seen wire nuts cause issues many times. Especially if people dont line up the wires correctly when twisting on the nut. Not saying you're wrong by using them....just having a friendly conversation

Curious how the electrical upgrade could have burned the motor up?

This isn’t the first time , when the job supervisor told me “ I think the electrician crossed something up because the fire alarm was set off after they turned power back on and smelled smoke” I figure they single phased that motor circuit. Same guys took a sawzall to the old chiller control circuit conduit without verifying power off. This happens when low bid is used.
