You need the brake caliper compressor wind back tool. It does not compress like the old piston, it rotates is back in place. I rented mine from auto zone. But I see them on sale at Amazon now for like around $20-$25

@@NagarjunBhat I don’t think so, you can look at my other video when I replaced my RAV 4 rotors. I would recommend buying it from Subaru if you do, I tried after market and they warped after a year.
@KevinSun2423 ай бұрын
Replacing rotors is just one extra step of removing two bolts from the caliper bracket to the car. You'll see the two bolts on the rear. Once the bracket is free, the rotor should come right off. If it's rusty, you may need to hit the rotor with a sledgehammer a few times to break it loose. Some manufacturers like Honda use a screw to secure the rotor to the hub which should be obvious to see. When you install the new rotor, try to brush off the hub face of any rust and dirt, and use brake clean on the two sides of the new rotor that make contact with the pad as they are often coated with oil as a rust proofing measure while they sit in a warehouse waiting to be used. Torque the caliper bracket bolts back on to spec - the bracket often is a much higher torque spec than the smaller caliper bolts that go into the slider pins.

Nice video. Thank you! Ive been looking into doing this for a while, since buying a 2022 outback wilderness. Owned numerous other vehicle types in the past and the process is a breeze. Unfortunately the newer high tech cars have a number of sensors. From reading other sites, it appears the outback needs to be put into the brake serive mode through the ecu with a obd scanner. Did you have any problems with brake error codes on your dash after your service?

Did you check the rotors for wear? Did you have them resurfaced? I have been replacing disc brake pads for several decades and, except for a Dodge Ram I owned, all rotors had to be replaced because they are made to go below minimum thickness when the pads are replaced. They could not be resurfaced.

@crabjoe Жыл бұрын
@@andrewchua4875 It's the electric parking brake (EPB). You need to put it into service mode so it retracts. If you don't do this, as you did, you may not be able to compress your piston and or break your caliper. The cheap way to retract your EPB is to pull the cover off the EPB and turn the bolt to retract the brake. Another way is to use some alligator clips connected to a 12v battery and touch the 2 pins on the connector to retract the parking brake.
@wildmanofthewynooch7028 Жыл бұрын
You need a bi directional scan tool like a Topdon Phoenix elite to put it in service mode and you don’t have to disconnect the EPB.
@yancheng8468 ай бұрын
i am guessing that's why in another video the ebrake parking actuator has to be removed completely before using the retractor tool to spin the caliper back - assuming you don't wanna buy another scan tool to put ebrake in service mode

@@andrewchua4875 Thanks for the video, however, I now have real trouble. I'm definitely not here to talk junk, just to share my experience. I followed the instructions exactly as you have them. I didn't connect to a scan tool, nor did I figure out the service mode. I can confirm that the parking brake was off when I started the work. After I finished the work, I started the car and tried to get it to move and the rear brakes were completely locked up. Ultimately, I damaged a bunch of stuff in the front end trying to get the car to move. I've been around cars and this kind of work my whole life. It's not my first brake job. But it's a different game with these newer cars. I'm glad it was easy for you. Not for me. The computerization of the brakes did me in. For those looking to do this job, it's not the mechanical stuff that's hard, just make sure you have the computer parts sorted out so you don't end up with a mess like I have. Thanks.

All I had to do was make sure the electronic parking brake was off. I believe that if it is engaged, you will not be able to turn to compress the pistons. I mentioned if you have resistance while turning them, stop as you are fighting with the actuators and may cause damage.
