Replacing a Djembe Drumhead : Basic Overview

Some people mention using Shea butter around the opening of the drum before putting the new head on. Do you think this would be not needed at all or might it be even better to do so?

That’s not a bad idea, for dried out shells in particular. Its not necessary from our experience, but tends to help the head slide into tension easier

So, my husband is the drummer, not me. He plays his djembe pretty regularly, but it's getting pretty old. It has a tear in the side of the head and I'm wondering if maybe I can replace the head myself? I am pretty strong for a woman and I have learned how to fix a ton of the things in and around the house. Is this approachable for someone who's never done this before??

Yes! You can absolutely do it. When tightening everything up, it can wear on your back. Since this video, I’ve built a table which helps me get torque without the stress. Definitely watch some videos that go more in depth first. We’re Happy to answer any questions along the way!
