Follow along as I replace a round wick in a center draft lamp, pre-burn and level the wick and light it for the first time.

Thank you! I had no idea how to change the wicks in my center draft lamps, searched a couple times (maybe 2 years ago) & couldn't find anything. Found your video today.

I was able to improvise by using a piece of paper instead of that grey tube you used. Worked fine. Thanks for the upload!

Do all round wick lamps need flame spreaders? I just bought one, it's a hanging parlour lamp probably 1890s, and it's a round wick, but I don't know if it's a true centre draft lamp. There's no tube going through the font, it's just a regular, solid glass font
@Skulldiggers2 жыл бұрын
A true center draft will have a tube through the center of the lamp where it draws air from the bottom and comes out in the middle of the wick. The air comes through the spreader and feeds the flame. Yours may not need a spreader. There are several antique lamp collector sites on Facebook, where they could tell you anything you need to know about your lamp, and you can share pictures.

That's an interesting lamp. Does the globe have a magnifying effect?
@Skulldiggers Жыл бұрын
It doesn't really magnify, but the bubble fills with the flame and creates a concentrated bright point.

I just found this same exact lamp at a yard sale, but the flame spreader is stuck. Any tips on how to remove it safely?
@rodolfotorres62893 жыл бұрын
Yes citric acid solution and boil it for an HR with the lamp completely submerged

Thanks for the tip. I have a similar center draft lamp, but it didn't have a flame spreader when I bought it. So, I made a makeshift one. However, the top of the fuel tank gets too hot to touch after about an hour or so. Is it normal? How long can it go on on a full tank of fuel? Have you ever tried? Thanks in advance.

Burn time will depend on the size of the fount. It should not get to hot on the top of the fount, You should join Antique Kerosene Heater and Lamp Collectors on Facebook. You could post some pics and we could tell you all about it. Someone might even have a flame spreader you.

Do you use low sulfur kerosine?
@Skulldiggers2 жыл бұрын
I usually use Crown K1 kerosene, but most people prefer Klean Heat that can be bought at Lowes, Home Depot or Walmert, it has less odor. If your wick is clean and trimmed there should be no odor from kerosene.

No one has lamps like this how about the American rayo
@Skulldiggers8 ай бұрын
A lot of people have lamps like this, they are more common than the Rayo, but.... The Rayo process is exactly the same. Pretty much any round wick lamp.
