FINALLY!!! Have watched ALL the videos on how to remove a toilet seat and your suggestion was the only one that worked! Although I used a small butane torch to heat the nut and melted it enough to pry it thru the hole. Thanks for the helpful tip!!!

Honestly you'd think they would create a toilet seat mechanism that is easier to remove. Thanks so much for this, I spent a lot of wasted time on my hands and knees under a toilet cursing, before I watched your no nonsense video!

You are fearless with that torch!!! Thank you so much for this video. I managed to get three of four nuts off with pliers but was going wacky with the fourth. This saved me so much time!! The world needs more women carrying torches who aren't afraid to use them!!

I recently broke the soft clothes mechanism, by forcing it down when I was in a hurry, for the seat (but not the lid) of my maybe 10 or 12-year-old Bemis Whisper-close elongated toilet seat that I put on myself. The nut on that is different than that while the bolt is metal like yours, the plastic nut has a flared washer attached at the top and goes down about an inch further as a hexagonal tube. I purchased another Bemis toilet seat from one of the two main home supply companies, that I thought was the same model ,but it isn't--the seat seems a bit narrower and the supports underneath are also smalle, lid is shaped differently. It also uses all plastic bolts and wing nuts. I didn't get to test how sturdy it is because although I got the left nut off the old seat using a socket ratchet wrench, I couldn't get the right one off, the problem is not helped by turning it the wrong way at first. But the socket wrench would slip on the hex nut. I tried pliers and they wouldn't move it and eventually mangle the surface of the hex facets. So until I can try something else like your idea with a torch, I cleaned up the residue around the hinges and put the old seat back on. The old seat is fine in great condition but it just doesn't slow close for the seat itself. I wonder if there's a way to repair that. Although I ordered it online I think I can return the new one to a physical local store. I'm not sure I would like it anyway. It seems more cheaply made. There are several other models that might be better from the same company or one of their other brands, like Mayfair.

Excellent video article. It's not necessary to buy a blow torch - heating the putty knife or a large slotted screwdriver on the stove top would work as well. Thanks

Amazing tip. Didn't have a blow torch, but used my gas stove top. A million thanks.

Your video is really help me. It works ! I use screw driver + bread knife and candle instead of chisel and propane fire. It took 1.5 hours for one nut to break because I cut in 2 side of the nut and I could not see it when I cut it (really difficult area to reach). Thank you very much!

Brilliant! I use my gas stove to heat up the putty knife and after a few back and forths it worked! Thank You :-)

This is my problem and the exact seat I have. I'll never buy anything with plastic nuts again. Thanks.

Thank you SO MUCH! #girlpower p.s. I do feel people should know to turn on vent as melted plastic emits toxic fumes sometimes.
