Like the way you removed the brake shoes, saves having to stretch the bottom spring too much. Also, good technique for the top spring, just enough clearance to get it out.

Idea: if you don't have a clamp for the break hose, you can put two plastic tubes in a small spring nose plier and use it. Where do you can find the rubber gaskets that seal the pistons inside the brake wheel cylinder?

Good idea. I'm not sure where you'd buy the gaskets but the cylinders are quite cheap so you'd probably be better off buying a new complete cylinder :)

Does a small tear in a wheel cylinder boot mean it has to be replaced? Mechanic said it doesn't need to be replaced if no leak.

I would advise replacing the boot or the entire cylinder as soon as possible. The tear will allow dust and debris to get in which might eventually cause the pistons to seize up
