Time after time I go looking on KZbin for help with things. Today I am looking for options on how to repair some broken SMA connectors, or just to reinforce them, and JC’s video pops up. This kid was so smart and helpful in the R/C, FPV community… it just breaks my heart knowing we lost such a great kid and a fellow motorcyclist. I hope his channel stays up.

Thanks a million, I purchased the sleeve crimping tool, that was a waste, I have repaired my little antenna lead many times using the tool, of late I decided that I needed to solder that center pin, that fixed some problems but still the ends pull off if not treated with kid gloves and I haven't owned a pair of them since my Army days in the early 70's. I have another pack of ends coming, in the next set, I will follow your instructions and see if my little radios will run right with the good method of repair.

I never heard before of soldering the shield to the sma. Magnificent labour saver and re-doable too! Great.
@MrShwaggins Жыл бұрын
a dab of flux would work wonders for soldering the ground shield wire to the connector. Also, maybe snip a piece of solder into the pin and head it up versus trying to get a drop into a tiny opening.

Good thing that’s Teflon coax/connectors or you would totally turn your coax into a molten blob! You aren’t going to use this method on RG-174 , I understand the desire to reuse connectors but I’m also fairly sure these were never meant to be installed twice. Good luck! I will try this with some RG-316 see what I get

I just learned so much from your video thank you very much. How do you determine on the length for gmrs and or ham radios and can you use the 771 from gmrs radio 2 a ham radio and share the same antenna with open frequency. And just switch from gmrs two ham radio without changing antennas. Thank you very much for the great show Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you

Is it also possible to use the existing sat-comnectors and adaptors F connector to SMA? Or will I have a weak connection by doing so?

What type of koax do you use?
@-_-_-.... Жыл бұрын
Dude, you definately need another solder tip for these jobs, that little point tip will only be efficient for little solder pads... take a bit wider one (flathead screwdriver style) will distribute the heat very well. As i saw you using the tip on the bigger part of the tip...

Very interesting, I wish to solder a micro version of this coaxial wire (xbox series XS controller) and using that gauge you have would be easier. Are antenna, gauge specific? EDIT scrap that; Any thicker and it wouldn't have the correct SMA size
@JT-jy2sy7 жыл бұрын
i always wanted to do this. Great video. Just a question the right angle bulkhead, if you do not solder the inner core signal wire to the pin is there a possibility in a crash or even just bending the rg cable inner core wire get push inside and contacting the outer wall. Have you seen this happen before?

Sorry to hear (based on the comments) that this person is no longer with us, but for those of you watching this video in 2024, please, please, PLEASE use flux when soldering. Flux-core solder is not a replacement for proper flux application. That giant glob of solder is a big ugly cold solder joint, which won't be nearly as strong, nor as electrically sound as it would be if flux was applied and 1/4 of the amount of solder was used.

In order to solder, the substrate (connector in this case) has to be brought upto temperature. Your solder joints are cold.
@frostironfitness31732 жыл бұрын
Not true. By definition a cold solder joint is one that is not melted completely, which may cause cracking or failure in the future. Just because he heated the cable more than the connector does not mean the joint is cold. Is it perfect technique? No. Will it fail in flight? No. Why? Enough solder is bound, and has melted completely. It's not perfect, but it's also not a cold joint. Only replying to you because the creator died in a motorcycle crash a little over four years ago. So he cannot defend himself.
