Greetings from Ireland. How about inserting a capacitor between the source output and the vu meters to block the dc element?

To be honest I thought of that but I got lazy. Given the other hassles with the radio I've decided that it has to go so the hunt is back on for a proper replacement.

I'm wondering if there might be a third-party firmware replacement made for the earlier device.... as in, if someone else created an open-source firmware drop-in replacement, having reverse engineered the original. Also, I wonder how easy or hard it is to replace the rechargeable battery in that new unit with a higher-capacity one. Come to that, I wonder if the particular one in there is simply faulty, and if the makers of that device will replace it, or the unit, with one that works better.

That would be terrific if a suitable firmware was available as the battery in that unit is nice and beefy - lasts for days. The battery in the new unit is tiny so it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't last long. You'd think the designers would at least make it last for say 12hours. I'll keep looking out for alternatives. Based on the online reviews I'd say this is just a crappy unit.

So how far can you throw your signal, enough to cover the whole house and a little beyond?

Yes, it covers the whole house and not much more. I tested with a set in the car but it lost signal after I got maybe 20metres. It works fine for what I need and of course I'm using the basic minimum 5m antenna wire.
