Replacing Commonly Worn & Knocking Solid Rear Axle Bushes On A 2010 Ford Fiesta

Every Ford Fiesta will require these bushes to be replaced at least once during it’s lifetime. They can wear to a point where they will also fail an MOT due to excessive movement.
In this video, i’ll show you typical symptoms of worn bushes, how to diagnose them and the process of how to replace them.
You will undoubtedly require specialist tooling to successfully complete replacement and safety is paramount. Although I’ll show you the process it can present a dangerous situation when lifting the vehicle and axle independently. Please take your time, be careful and ensure you use safety equipment at all times.

When I change my cars oil at every 5000 miles . Thankfully by use of a mechanics lift . I liberally spray 303 Protectant on all rubber parts . As this will help them resist drying out and cracking .

Removing the old bush is really easy. Obviously it doesn’t matter how destroyed they get as the are heading for the bin anyway. So get yourself a good electrician holesaw and arbour. It needs to be larger than the aluminium internal bolt holder but smaller than the hard plastic shell of the bush. Simply run the cutter through, then carefully with a recip saw if you have one or a reversed hack saw. Blade through the big hole then reattach to the saw. Carefully cut the hard plastic without damaging the metal. One good hit with a mechanic chisel or an old screwdriver and she’s out. To clean the inside, a cheap old flappy sand paper disk in a drill does a great job.

This!! Using a 64mm hole saw is the perfect size, it cuts right on the plastic bur clears the steel frame. After that it’s just one or two whacks with a hammer and the bush is out

Yeah, and we used to replace the void bushes with the offical Ford solid ones out of the RS parts catalogue ( microfiche as it was back in the day no computers back then)..

Great instructional video, personally i think the air hammer is abit of a rough way of doing this job but you did a great cleanup i go for the drilling and sabre blade reciprocating saw method myself

I’ve struggled to get those bushes out before working in a busy garage done a lot of these all I do is gently hear the eye of the axle that contains the bush and a couple of swift blows with a hammer and they fly out works every time 👍

These are easy to do . Just use a hole cutter on a drill to take the central part of the bush out. Then get a air saw and cut the metal bush carrier . Once it’s cut through it will break the tension and can be tapped out easy. Then use a bearing puller to pull the new bush in.

I find the easiest method to remove is to drill 1 or 2 holes with 6 mm drill bit between edge of bush splitting the plastic surround then couple hits with hammer and comes out. Great vid though.

If you've got the tool for vw golf rear axle bushes they're a purfect fit to pull these bushes in aswell, with a27 mm socket as a spacer on the thread

Hi Just purchased a 2012 fiesta titanium 1.4 and I'm get a very load clonking noise coming from near side rear and front could this possibly be the same problem It's a sound like steel knocking agenst steel

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. The rear bushes don’t usually start to knock/wear until up to and around 60-80k miles. Fiestas are also known for the rear coil springs breaking prematurely at the bottom, and the broken part of the spring will bounce around and sound like a rattle metal sound. In the front, likely to be either a drop link ball joint work OR a lower arm ball joint. All as common to wear as each other for Fiestas. Have your local garage carry out an inspection to confirm and quote from there. I have another video on the channel for front knocking on Fiestas. That will explain everything you’ll need to know. I was told that you cant buy bushes alone you need to buy a new complete Axle im from SouthAfrica how true is this?

Replacing the complete axle is a huge job and completely unnecessary. New bushings are around €10 each.

Bushes are £10 each UK after market parts....approx £22each from Ford or £60 pair for performance polyurethane bushes.....I can do a pair in 1-1.5 hours.

Mine were an advisory on the last MOT. The garage changed them as it was a bit beyond my limited DIY mechanic skills

@@jayrx12 A neighbours car has this as an advisory. I will be replacing the brake pads and disc for her, but the bushes will be left for a local mechanic 🙄 I like to help where I can but this job is way beyond me to do on the drive.

I had the wet belt replaced recently and the garage advised me to consult my local garage about the bushes as my MOT was coming up. My local garage said it wasn’t worth them checking them as the inspectors differ in their opinions on those bushes. My garage said they could say they were ok and the MOT May view it differently. My car passed its test with no advisories. I will get them done eventually but it seems they have to be really broken before they become an issue so far as MOT’s are concerned.

Hey, guys any idea why I am experiencing inside tire wear on both rear tires? Would worn bushings cause it or something else?

Probably too much negative camber and tires need to be aligned, I'd have a shop swap the tires around and do an alignment + rear check just in case

They knock out with a long tubular socket (it's actually the input sleeve socket for transit gearboxes) and I'm only 5:6 and 11 stone... clowns with drills,saws and air hammers.... and I missed the part where the torque wrench came into play and the axle/bush bolt were renewed 😂😂
