I had two “technicians” (actually sales people) come out and quote me from between 8k-14k to replace my whole air conditioning system. They said it was burned out and not worth the money to fix. I ended up doing it myself for less than $300 by watching this video (I ended up changing out the capacitor and contactor as well). This is the real deal, don’t let yourself get ripped off.

Yeah I got quotes for new AC units 11-18K. Absolutely insane. Luckily I watched this video I’m getting this done asap. I already know it’s not the capacitor. Had someone come look at it.

For house units this is insane but I'll explain why. The epa, the government and r410 freon. If you fill with old freon it will cost you upwards of $350-700 a pound to put in so a new unit is better. But they're ripping y'all I just had one of my commercial units replaced for $17k it's a 5 ton of I remember right.

I replaced the capacitor then the compressor would run but the fan wont, double checked all connections and everything was fine. Texted an HVAC tech I know and was hoping he will be able to come and fix the fan tomorrow. Then I watched your video right before going to bed and went to the unit with a long screw driver, gave it a spin and pushed the breaker in and the unit started running just fine. Tomorrow if the HVAC guy could make time would come and with a poke of screw driver drain $200 out of my pocket. Thank you so much for the video. Just to share with all, my AC stopped working Saturday night and all the HVAC supply stores are closed on Sunday (Atlanta area). So I ordered it from Amazon for $14.99 then added another item to the order to bring my total to over $25 and got overnight Prime delivery in less than 24 hours. When searching I searched for items that has overnight delivery available.

Thanks for sharing, very good video, it doesn't seem like a difficult task w/ your video. Questions: 1) My condenser runs well, but when the temperature outside gets really cold or hot, it makes a REAL LOUD noise (like buzzing/humming), is this an indication of bad capacitor/motor? Is there a way I can be sure it is before I try to replace it? 2) Why did you cut the bolts? Couldn't you have the left the original length? 3) Why is the motor reversable and doesn't run just on one/the right direction? 4) Is it OK to leave the wires wrapped on the grill permanently? Thank you.

I have never seen anybody receive a shock from a run capacitor connected to an AC voltage source. What you need to worry about is capacitors connected to a high voltage DC source (televisions, HVAC inverters, etc.).

You'll be fine as long as the disconnect is pulled. If you touch the leads with it still in you'll get a shock but it's only about 110v to 120v. It's not that bad tbh.

Pull the disconnect, but this only disrupts the 240v not the 24v, so don’t touch the side of the contactor 😁. Be sure the MFD/UF rating for the new fan is correct. Usually I’m taking a 1075/825 rpm 5uf fan out and replacing with a 7.5uf. I know your comment is 4 months old but hopefully that can still help 😀

something I have seen I would like to mention. The wires coming from the fan to the contacts. I have seen on some mobile home manufacturers that didn't have a plastic sleeve for the wires , and I guess it could be the installers , using plastic ties to strap the wire to the top grill. Don't do that. Plastic degrades in the sun. And it will be fine for a while but when it gives and the wire drops into the fan and the fan bends and cuts into the coil, that's totaled. If you have to do that use a coat hanger or something and you need something around the wire if you can to protect it from the sun as well. just sayn
@MoreThanMaintenance
@MoreThanMaintenance 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly that is a very valid point. Most newer manufacturers (probably to minimize costs) do not have the protective clips on the wires like the older models. Many condensers have clips on the under of the panel where the motor attaches. Regardless I appreciate the input especially when the goal is to help technicians become more effective in the field.
@ckennedy309
@ckennedy309 2 жыл бұрын
@@MoreThanMaintenance Typically if your fan gets bent it won't touch the coil due to the way most manufacturers put the fan in a throat away from the coil. But this was an obviously cheap AC only package unit. The heat was in another unit inside, they just joined the ducts. Crazy set up to someone who isn't a mech tech. So really I said it for the DIY who is likely the most common viewer of a you tube video. I'm just a n HVAC controls Tech who was trying to help someone. @xabsentimentalx
@xabsentimentalx 2 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit late to this but the only thing you need to be mindful of is discharging it before handling. The safest way to do so is with a load resistor, I have a 100W 4 ohm set for that. In truth you can use almost any conductor but a resistor will bleed it slightly slower and its safer. You want to be absolutely certain power is shut off before you do so as you'll be intentionally creating a short by connecting each contact to each other. Ie A to B, B to C, A to C. Ensure you are using something insulated to discharge it, or insulated gloves as you don't want to be the path to ground when touching potentially live wires

The motor I purchased was a Fasco D7909 motor. The best way to find out what motor is best for your specific unit is to take the information from your condenser motor or if you remove the motor from the condenser and check the specifications on the motor you removed. You want note of running amps... and voltage of motor matches your specs. You can purchase this online 👍 $80-120 is reasonable.
