Wow... after 18 months of a cooling fan error message (and the deterioration through non performance affecting my keyboard badly this last two weeks) I decided to get on the net. Doing all the above seemed just that bit too much (I got 60 pc there, lol). Anyway, just before putting it all back together, I : Blew hard into the fan area a few times, used a needle to move the blades around and repeated the blowing... started my laptop...and NO ERROR message (!). The fan started WORKING (only three times a silent as the last time it worked where it was likely just trying to move, lol). Thanks to the vid for the inspiration as the frustration was doing my head in!!! : ) : )

Even tho my laptop isn't EXACTLY like yours (Mines a Pavilion G6) Your instructions helped me SO much. A milllion thanks for saving me money and giving me confidence. There are a few of these instructional videos out there but they're either a. sped up to high speed or b. have no narration or real guidance. I only wish you lived next door for help when my desktop computer needs service (which isn't yet). YOU ROCK!

THIS WORKS. A big thanks to the maker of this video! I used this guide to fix the overheating in my laptop by cleaning the lumps of dust that have built up inside over the years. WARNING when removing the keyboard be careful that you make sure that you bring the whole keyboard which is made of multiple layers, if you try to force it with only the first layer you'll snap it like I nearly did which isn't shown in this video. However other than that this is a great tutorial and would recommend others to put there faith in this video. Make sure your computer isn't in warranty before opening it however as it'll make that void. I didn't need to worry as my laptop was 5 years old. thanks once again for the video!

Thanks for this video. Replaced the fan in my wife's G6; it now works perfectly again. To all those that might wonder about replacing the thermal compound: please do yourself and your laptop a big favor and do so. I will hesitate a guess that this series laptop has this problem because they probably use low quality thermal compound. As the laptop heats up, the fan has to run faster and longer to keep the heat under control, because the thermal compound has deteriorated. This probably causes premature wear and death of the fan. That gold colored tubular device on the fan/heatsink assembly is a heatpipe. It functions similar to an Air conditioning compressor. It tranfers the CPU heat to the fan exhaust by heating up and changing it's liquid into a gas. This then changes back into a liquid as it is cooled by the fan exhaust.

Dave very good video. This was the biggest computer repair I have ever done and this video helped me a ton. My cooling fan is now replaced on my G6 2319 and the error message is gone! I do have 1 big suggestion regarding the PART 2 video. When I got to the part of removing the heat sink/fan assembly, I called a very reputable PC store and asked about cleaning and re-applying the thermal compound and they said it was not necessary. This will save some time. Just be sure to get ALL the dust out. My laptop is 4 years old and the compound was all dried up anyway so I didn't see the need to clean with rubbing alcohol and re-apply. Another tip is when you remove the keyboard use a fine razor blade to pry part of it up carefully and it will come out pretty easy - just go slow. Take pictures with your phone along the way and it will go fine. Thanks Dave!

9:56 Thank You! I tore my G6 down to clean the fan and ran into these two connections and didn't know the proper technique. I've been googling for a couple hours and not even Ifixit had these connectors listed. Kinda glad they did hinder my progress now since I don't have thermal paste atm to fully dismantle for the thorough cleaning it needs. That's my project for tomorrow and also to locate where these 8 extra screws belong! lol

Excellent video. Unfortunately when I put the wireless card back in, one of the little gold coloured terminals would not fit back on. It seems to have got damaged and won't clip back on the terminal. I felt I had no alternative but to gently try and attach it with a bit of solder. I did my best to make sure there was no heat transfer to the wireless card. It attached okay but when I turned on the laptop, I noticed that I was only getting 3 aerials instead of five and wonder if I have caused a bit of damage? I wonder do I need a new wireless card, though the damaged clip is the other bit coming from inside the laptop.

Hi. I accidentaly "broke" my laptop fan. I thought I'd try get some dust out of the laptop by putting my vacuum cleaner nossle hard up against the air vents. When i started my laptop again a message saying the fan wasnt working and reccommended shutting down to avoid damage from overheating. I dont think sucking air from the vacuum would have broken the fan. Do you think something might have come loose or should I replace it? My model is identical to the one in the video. The instructions are great but I can't get these screws out for the life of me, I swear they're superglued.. and therefore couldnt open it to check.
