Really enjoying this channel. Given a lot of the bad press, especially recently, around some dairy farms, it is really good to see farmers who are dedicated to caring for their livestock and talking about why they do certain things. I am sure most farmers are like this but they are not the ones that make the news unfortunately.
@scottcrockett82705 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Just like these Animal groups to skew reality in their favor. All 3 of the dairy farmers I follow work sun up til sun down caring for their herds and keeping their farms up. You can see they care for the animals

@Sally Vee I disagree, because they bash the industry. You dont see a video bashing just 1 production dairy farm or 1 chicken producer. It's the industry as a whole. If they were TRULY fair theyd show a comparison of humane facilities to contrast.

Please don't take this time for granted. You will love the memories when you are older. I grew up on a small dairy farm in central IL and my memories are priceless. My dad wanted boys and got 4 girls. We worked hard and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It made me who I am today. We had a free stall building too. My dad used corn cobs and straw for bedding. Worked great. Keep up the good work. Love your videos.

It seems essential really. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the quality of the milk largely equate to the happiness of the cow?

@@junkiexl86 Mastitis and high cell counts are, they say, due to cleanliness. Not always the case though. We had an unbelievably low cell count (Bactoscan) on a farm I worked at for more than 20 years. They said it was so low that if we got an outbreak of mastitis it could run riot through the herd. Thankfully it never did. Don't get me wrong, we had the occasionally cow but you isolate them. Plus, as these lads do, you make sure that milk doesn't go in the bulk tank.

Animal husbandry at its finest, well done. Happy cows even with a hammer drill going flat out!! As a teacher, I planned and executed many field excursions to various locations around Ohio. Students truly enjoyed them. I know school trips wouldn’t be practical on your farm; however, wise educators (vocational teachers, FFA leaders, etcetera) could really enlighten young learners with the variety of skills needed in farming and many, many other vocations. You’re quite the educator yourself! A+!!!

Although we never had free stall barn and milk parlor with water mats, I prided myself on keeping the barn clean and fly control and some air moving thru it all in comfort for the cows. Never beat on them and most were tame and had names. We milked 70 for several years and it was a job to keep it up. I only raise 4 to 6 Holstein steers at a time now from bottle to butcher and the little barn I have now I clean at least three times a day for them. When it's hot they lay in the barn to get out of the sun and I have a big fan on them and spray for flies. All about their comfort. Their fat and sassy and tame as kittens. It's nice to see taking care of the livestock is what it's all about.
@8tomtoms85 жыл бұрын
I love your comment, oldfarmer. Those 4 to 6 steers have the best life possible while on earth with you. I raised and milked Holsteins while I grew up and I know your type, I was one of them!! Those cows were my babies and my best friends. I did the fans, fly spray and all. I don't think my cows ever wanted for anything, except me, when I went off to college.

I encourage you to go around and check out farms you’d be surprised they all treat cows really well, cows are their income! It’s only the very few bad ones that get called out and shamed online as they should be. Farmers do well if they treat cows right. It’s a shame thousands of farmers get a bad rap because of the few guys who shouldn’t own cows. “Look after your cows and they’ll look after you”

You probably won't see this almost a year later but I loved the shot of the cow licking the dog. It brought back memories. I left farm country after graduating high school in 1976 and got a job in a steno pool (thing of the past) and a studio apartment in downtown Albany, New York April 1977 and, well, my mom was a farm girl so we considered a cat a necessity and got one of those too. (Not sorry. Got a mouse; she killed it.) Well, that summer, the park had a farm-city day where farmers came and showed what they did to the city kids. Of course, I had to go! My cat was vicious and in the city, too much traffic and weirdos to let her run so I walked her in the park with a leash every weekend. One of the farmers had set up a cow with a wooden post fence and was showing all the little kids how to milk. I had to watch for a while and set my cat on the fence to do so, chatting with the farmer and watching the kids have fun milking. Well, my cat was about six months' old and had never seen a cow before and was staring with much curiosity. But, of course, the cow was familiar with cats and she just looked at my cat and went slurp with her tongue across my cat's face. My cat jumped but then she started purring. She liked that cow!

25 years ago I visited a dairy farm in California. I didn't get to see the entire operation, of course, but I believe the cattle were kept in large outdoor pens and the cows had nowhere to lie except in the manure that covered the entirety of the pen. It is possible that I didn't see that they actually did have a nice(r) place to lie, but I am glad that your cows are cared for so well.
