Great video! I had to replace the entire tank last year on my 2016 muscle because I got lazy checking the belt tension. It got too loose and was slicing through the tank. My Fuel unit went out the 1st. year I purchased the bike but the dealer replaced it under warranty. Now my fuel sensor needs replacing but I'm holding off because I'm riding it every chance. I just top off the tank and set the mileage to zero and fill up after it hits a 120. I really enjoy the bike and plan to keep it.

Got this figured out. After 2 years of gauge working when it wants to, I bought a new unit for $70 and it worked fine - for exactly 2 months. Then one day it got down to 1/4 tank/52 miles remaining and stayed there for 30 miles. Asking myself what could be causing this, I thought of the ethanol in the gas. So I dumped a strong dose of StarTron fuel treatment in the tank and repeated for a few tank-fulls, now about every-other fill-up. NO MORE GAS GAUGE PROBLEMS. It looks like an ethanol problem. Why, I don't know, but it seems to work.

Great video. Just put a new fuel sending unit in my 09 VRod Muscle and followed everything here to a tee. Can't believe the only difference between the old FSU and the new is the float. Big design flaw and another $100 to HD. Still, I love this bike. Thanks for the video.

Just so you all know a month went by before the gauge went out again. I did a little research, the only thing that seems to actually fix the problem when this happens is to pull the 40amp fuse on the front right side of the bike for 10 mins, and plug it back in. about once a month this happens to me and resetting the fuse seems to get back in working order. Hope this helps for everyone else.

ok my question what was your gas gage doing before? and did this solve the trouble? I have a v rod and can watch my fuel gage go from 1/4 tank to E with in 2 miles but when I fill my tank it only takes 1.7 gal .. thanks for the video .. if it worked for your bike mabey I will give it a try... thx

joe beland Mine was doing the same thing, it was going from E to Full and in between while driving. The tube on the new fuel sending unit has a float that gives a more accurate reading. Once installed problem was resolved. My gauge now reads correctly.

if you cycle the ignition switch it go to normal drive for a block and your down a1/4 of a tank

Hi mate . Is the long yellow/orange flex hose connected to something at the bottom or is it just a free ending open hose which sits in the fuel

So it's been years since I did this video. However after watching it again I saw the yellow flex tube is connected at the top and the bottom. Watch it again and you should see it.

Very sad that such a great bike has this basic design flaw. Harley should be held accountable for things like this, either forced to do a recall or pay to fix you problem. I have the very same issue, 2014 Vrod with less than 2K on it. Watching this video give goose bumps to think of going through all the hassle of replacing this part to find out a month later that I need to pull a fuse every 30 days to keep using my bike. I'll do more research. By the way, HD engineers really suck, just by having you take the whole freaking system out just because they decided to use a damm spring ring to hold the fuel sensor part in place. If they had just use few screws from the top, you could just take those out and not worry about disconnecting fuel hoses, etc. Bastards indeed.

I would contact the Harley dealer to find the exact part for your bike.

I did all the tests that they say, from removing a fuse to replacing the piece, but at the same time it starts again to mark badly. It has no definitive solution. putting this spare part is working for a certain time or miles. Harley did not give a definitive solution to this problem, nor did the engineers care about designing something that works correctly. I am very angry since it is an expensive motorcycle and can not have this fall.

Torque is 44-53 in-lbs, 5-6 Nm. The sequence is facing bike from right side 9 o’clock, 3, 11, 5, 1, 7

great video, man. I am having problem with mine as well. did yours give you some random readings including but not limited to low fuel light when the tank was full or full when it was almost empty? Just curious, cause i was going to give it a try if you were having similar symptoms to mine. Thanks.

Yes Ryan. My guage was all over the place. This seems to be a common problem. Since replacing I have not had any issues.

The tank was full but the gauge was bouncing between full and empty.

I would call your local Harley dealer and give them the model. They can then give you the part number to order.

My 2012 HD V-Rod Muscle is doing the same thing. I checked the number on my FSU and its the replacement number, the one without the A. So I'm guessing the FSU was replaced sometime before I bought it a 7 weeks ago. But its still all over the place. Any thoughts?

Does your FSU have a float? My old one did not but the new one does.

I haven't pulled the FSU, I thought since it had the new number, that it would have it. But that is a good point. I'll check and see if it does have a float. Thanks for the reply.

hello kjlc1, I have some issues with my 06 street rod, fuel gauge drops from 3/4 to 0 and bike starts behaving like empty tank at same time. I feel loss of power, engine dies at stops and after filling it up (takes only 2-3 liters of gas) goes smooth until gauge goes down to 3/4 and 0. do you think replacing fuel sending unit will help? thanks

that sounds like more than just the fuel sending unit. my gas guage was all over the place but the bike was running fine.

When the marker marks "empty", it sends information to the ECU and this cuts off the fuel supply.

My 2014 started having issues. Reads full, 3/4, 1/2 tank than stalls, no fuel. So annoyed with HD, $18,000.00 bike with less than 6k miles. Really! Just went to the dealership and I almost had a heart attack...they want $460.00 smack a roos for a sending unit. Have to be cheaper or I am stopping at a gas station every 100 miles...so disappointed with Harley Davidson...going back to Japanese.
