Every VAG car ends up like that. In time the rubber coating is getting weaker and easily peelable/scratchable . Mine was a little worse.

Saturnian Pytonwielki it was pretty common for vag in that time period to use a special kind of coating that wears off soooo easily... it surely looked great when new but that's pretty much it

It happened in older VW's from mid 2000's when drivers used some types of hand cremes and products. Mostly women caused the erosion of the rubber coating on the plastics.

Yeah, this is pretty much what my car looks like on the inside (also a Golf 5). I read on a forum somewhere that VW was stingy when it came to the materials in the interior for generations 4 and 5. This has supposedly been fixed with generation 6, though I can't personally confirm that as I've only ever driven the 5th generation.

It's mostly the soft touch gunk that will, inevitably, start coming off.

I used all these parts in my gti as well and i love them. They work good were super cheap, And loog and work just as good as the OEM parts

It's the soft touch material, as soon as any oil or heat or even a strong aftershave can degrade the coating so badly, im sure certain audi cars have the same kind of problem if your not very careful

I have the MK4 130hp 5 door. Its a good car with stupid endemic failures and the plus failures caused by its age (17). But yes, the quality of the builds and materials (like the "soft touch rubber", the fabric and the glue ) used are trash for sure. But its a car near the 20 years old, and in Spain there are a lot of them nowaday on the road, not for nothing... Greats from Spain, good video!

Make sure to clean your parts while they are okay to prevent this. Mine has Zero problems, all original, but I steam clean once a month

In 5 series the rubber coating was pretty bad made.. on my 4 series I did spray painted them with normal paint.. the result was pretty good.

@@primojackson3270 are you kidding? Me ex girlfriend got the 5 series.. the plastic of the dash was making a lot of noise.. The pioneer radio with Bluetooth mounted by VW absorb electricity when power off, the engine because of the "environment" rules was less powerful.. I can go on and on.. the 4 series got only the support of the windows as common issues.. and the rubber coating on the plastic.. the rest was mint!!

Very good video! I did it all but oem, how is your radio? Steering wheel?, wheel caps? Info display? All mine had to be replaced... Its a shame a 31 thousand euros car with this lack of material quality... Its global everybody has this issue! Is a shame! I contacted vw in Portugal and Germany and never got any answer... All my ceiling roof hood carpets were replaced, all doors carpet everything... Total 1200 euros inside, panels, ac vents, buttons etc... And another 1500 outside.. Paint, wheels etc... Beautiful car a child's dream great engine but the worse interior ever! Great video thanks!

Golf's always did have cheap interiors. Shame because they were not that bad to drive. Just everything tends to scuff and fall apart so quickly. Although it is marketed as a budget car so it's forgiveable.

Hi, what can be done to change that sprayed on matt finish on the centre consolle, is there a paint technique or similar? it can be seen on the old door handles in your video. After a while it scrapes off very easily and accidentally. Cheers from South Africa

The best way is to change them, the new door Handels from aliexpress will came with a paint matt finish not like the old ones that are coated with a rubber layer

you shift knob booth doesn't fit, you have the other version, without the plastic around, so now it sticks out and doesn't fit in as it should, so I suggest for others to check before if they have the shift knob booth as he does, with leather ending, no plastic around, don't order the wrong one, altho you're gonna have trouble finding the only leather one..Talking from my experience..
