The majority of axles utilized a directional threaded nut to retain the wheel. What I mean by directional threaded is; the axle was threaded with corresponding threads left on the left, right on the right. The principle is that when the carriage is traveling forward the rotation of the wheels bears a tightening force on the nut. If you have ever pushed a buggy backwards across the yard and lost a nut this is why. When removing the nuts turn it in the direction of the wheel going in reverse. The oldest type of axle is the wooden axle with clouted iron shoes covering the top and bottom wear area of the wood axle arm. The wheel as retained via a lynch pin. This was most common on Conestoga’s, schooners, freight wagons. The lynch pin was also incorporated on steel axles most commonly military vehicles. The thimble skein axle is a method replacing the clouted axle with a thimble of iron on the wood axle, this is what you find on most all farm wagons of the late 19th century. The most sophisticated is the collinge axle which was an oil bath axles with brass locking nuts to retain the wheel. Another odd axle you will find on some European carriages is the mail axle having the wheel retained via 3 bolts passing through the hub and fastened to an inner captured plate.

Thanks for this, I have a book set in a western / prairie setting and I was doing research on what a plausible "field repair" might be for a wagon. This was really helpful.

Guy came into our machine shop and asked if we could make a wrench to turn the nut off his old wagon, I asked which side he was trying to remove, he said the left side, he said it was so tight he bent the wrench he had made, I said those are left hand threads on the left side. He just gave me a dumb look and said "oh", I just smiled. lol

Wish you had shown the wagon with all the new wheels installed . Hopefully folks will take advantage of your wheels to get more wagons on the road .

Great video, helpful; thank you. I do not have an old wagon wheel wrench yet. Can you tell me what other wrench might work to pull the wheels? I believe the hub nut is 2-1/4"; does that sound correct? Will I be able to get a pipe wrench in there and still get a good grip on it? It seems kind of deep for a large crescent? Your thoughts? Thank you.

I am sure you have gotten this figured out by now sorry about that. In case you haven't you could make your own wrench using square tubing cut to the size you need and weld a handle on it. Sometime you can get a monkey wrench in there as well.
