Replacing Outer Tie Rod Ends & Without Alignment

In this video I replace the outer tie rod ends, and a deteriorated inner tie rod end rubber boot on my 2005 Camry. I also show how I did it without paying for a front end alignment. I also explain why often it is better to get an alignment. (Have the toe-in done at a reliable shop.)
As usual, risking the danger of putting you to sleep, I've "gone through it with as fine a tooth comb as you can imagine."

An old school method of alignment cheats is to take kite string and find a common point on both sides front of the tire and rear of the tires. Secure the string with knots on each ends of the strings and tuck them into the tire tread grooves. Mark the specific spots. When finished put the strings back in the place where the marks are on the tires. I shouldnt have to point this out but make sure you install the wheels on the same lugs as to locate the front mark on the front and the rear mark on the rear. If needed use diff color marks for front and rear or write front or rear.

Would measuring from locking nut to center of original ball joint work? To be more specific measure ball joint diameter and divide by 2 measure and mark. Measure now from locking nut to mark made. Put new tie tod end on and tighten up to where locking nut is tighten and re measure, adjust until meets measurement? This way you can write down the measurement or lock the measuring tape in place also

Sounds reasonable. Have to watch though if the new nut that comes with the tie-rod end is used. It is often a different width.

@@saabtech3510 I see. I will do I have been comtemplating to do it because of an alignment! I was nearly thinking of fitting outside a shop haha but I willt ry it tomorrow ! Thanks man!

If using strings or fishing line find two stationary points on each side. 4 is better. Do your best to find the same place on each side height distance from frame or body part on each side then make sure the strings are tight . do the work and do your best to make sure the strings are the same when youre done
