What kind of silica sand did you use? I'm taking on this project myself and wanted to look right.

@tanias9702 I used "playground sand" from Home Depot. Good luck with your project!

super cool video! I especially enjoyed the cinematic effect of the sand sprinkling! super cool shot where you only see the shadow of your hand but can see the sand falling down, that was cool! also, you should set up an amazon link to the tools you use! like was that an angle grinder with a special oscillating attachment?

Lol! Thank you, sir. Completely unintentional effect, but glad it turned out well!! I used a multi tool with a regular wood blade. However, by using it on cement it was quickly worn down and morphed into a cool U shape that nicely form fitted to the edges of the deck slabs. The same thing happened with the knife blade too.

Never use sand. Use backer rod.

Well, it will depend upon the region you're in and how many gaps you have to fill, but I'd count on two days of the going labor rate plus about $350 in materials.

Absolutely wrong. I have been a professional caulker for over 45 years. Deck o seal is W.R. Meadows brand of self leveling polysulfide sealant. And should NEVER be installed over sand.PERIOD. It has to be installed over backer rod. This is guaranteed to fail prematurely. In fact as a professional if I did this shoddy of work the manufacturer would right a letter voiding the warranty.. The joint should have been ground clean, and backer rod and primer are required. The backer rod gives the proper profile and primer should always be used around pool chemicals, and is just good general practice. And finally sand should NEVER be added to sealant it significantly shortens it’s life span. Deck o seal has a non slip coating specifically for this. Amateurs should not make videos on subjects they do not understand.

Thanks for your comments, it's always interesting to hear how experts do things differently. I didn't mention it in the video but there was already foam backer rod in the joints from a previous repair. Building up the height with compacted sand is common practice amongst pool contractors in my area and was even recommended by the vendor at Leslie's who sold me the Deck O Seal. Oh, also the product instructions state the sealant is made to adhere to concrete without the application of a primer. Nevertheless, I service this HOA frequently and with your warnings in mind will keep an eye on the joints and the potential for premature failure. Thanks again!

@@fixitfoxincNever rely on what is on the material package itself. ( when dealing with any sealants) W.R.Meadows clearly states in its literature ( and website) ,like all quality sealant manufacturers, primer should be used for ultimate performance. Almost all sealants say something like “ adheres to most common substrates without primer” when we have an issue ( we are not perfect and when you install well over 100 miles of sealant there are occasional problems)the first question we are asked is “did you use primer ?” Putting sand over the backer rod totally defeats the purpose of using backer rod. Backer rod provides the correct profile. You will never find a quality sealant manufacturer that says that sand is acceptable. And W.R. Meadows is no exception Taking advice about sealants from a pool supplier is hilarious. So is saying that using sand is common practice of pool contractors. As professional caulkers we laugh when we see a new pool go in. “We will be there in a few years” As a general rule pool contractors know next to nothing about sealants. Their expertise is building and maintaining pools. In our area sealants installed by most ( there are a couple that know what they are doing)pool contractors lasts an average of 7 years. Properly installed polysulfide should last 20 +

@@kernalrom all of them that I see that get it wrong. Especially when they act like they are professionals. People watch and think this is the correct way to install it.Caulking is not difficult but there are some very simple principles that need to be followed. And homeowners deserve to know how to do it correctly so it will last as long as possible. Especially when the correct way takes very little extra effort, and can extend the life of the sealant by 10 years. And it’s not my opinion on it being the right way. It is simply basics that the manufacturers demand.
