You will get many more views if you post this on the promaster forum instead of the city one. This is a fantastic video that needs to be seen. I now have the confidence to change out my tweeters. Thanks

I had a 1" alpine tweeter from a 6.5 speaker kit that fit just perfect where the stock tweeter goes. So far it sounds better. I need to replace the speakers now.

The funny thing is I go back to the 1970's with cars. My first car was a '69 beetle. The sound was always terrible in those cars back then. It was all based off AM radio, usually one paper speaker. I remember people upgrading their sound back then too. But my point is stock was so bad in most cars then! Today's stock is light years better and yet here we are bc we have better product upgrading sound now too!

That plastic sheet that was on the door was a water shield. To stop water damage to door panel and switches. That plastic shield to keep water in the door sheet metal and out the door drain. Do not throw it away, but it back on the door!

Hi, nice video! Do you know if tweeters have a dedicated outputs or they are just plug in parallele with the front speakers ? By the way, what is the actual size of those oem speakers? 5 1/4 i guest... I saw that you re-used the oem door braket, i can see that their is a void surounding the braket and the door frame. Does it affect the sound quality. I kniw that a after braket without any void, that exist on metra to fit 5 1/4" after market speakers, wonder if this would sound better?

I was thinking about replacing my promaster speakers with some basic 3 ways. Is there a crossover that needs to be removed to disable those awful sounding tweeters? I want to make sure that the full audio range makes it to the bottom speakers.

Good job. I wonder if the door panel can suport a 5.25 speaker. Or modify it to fit a 6x8

Incredible video ! I have a Promaster and am thinking about replacing the speakers. Best Buy will not do that nice job. How much do you think that would cost at a pro car audio shop? Including your/our Time factor would be helpful for us shade tree mechanics too. Thanks for the excellent video!

Really up to your own determination! One benefit of doing it yourself is that you get a better understanding of behind the scenes and if anything goes wrong you can fix it yourself. Lots of stories about shops doing a shoddy job and then needing to go back again and again to fix it.

Do not ever trash the foam covering like this guy . it adds to the acoustics of the door itself and was installed to keep it from rattling it's kind of like taking a sealed box and removing the back off of it and then thinking you're going to get a good sound always reinstall the foam back to the door

Very cool, just bought a new Promaster City. First thing I noticed was how there is no bass at all. The speakers aren't great, but not horrible, however the bass is nonexistent. I was thinking a Rockville sub and running a splice off the driver door speaker. Any one with thoughts on this setup?

I blew my driver-side speaker can I replace the sound system with JBL speakers and add the sub without changing the main unit?
@bryandamota

Because I was thinking about keeping the main unit to not lose the steering wheel controls and add an amplifier.
@SmartVan
@SmartVan 3 жыл бұрын
@@bryandamota I don't see why not. The sub I installed (another vid) is powered so doesn't need a separate amp. The stock head unit should have a built in amp to drive the jbl speakers you install.
@bryandamota

@@SmartVan Thank you. so you think I could install aftermarket speakers without changing the display unit and for the sub, I want to build my own sub to try to fit a bigger one and have the amp under the passenger seat.

Thanks for posting this, very helpful! I'm also going with the promaster city as a camper and plan to immediately upgrade the audio. Curious how things sound with the sub installed and if you were considering adding 3-way 6x9's (or similar) to the rear doors. Could be overkill, but i want to have really good sound which is difficult in a van.

My rear doors are part of a camper installation so I didn't bother, I just threw up a curtain which helps block some sound in the back

Crutchfield says this model of promaster has a 4" speaker, but in the video you used a 5.25" speaker setup? Are there any issues with this?
@SmartVan
@SmartVan 3 жыл бұрын
Worked fine, I measured it beforehand. I almost wonder if you could fit a 6" but haven't tried. It might work with creative mounting, there is still plenty of space between the speaker and the door panel if I recall.

Another PMC owner posted a video of him placing 6x9s where the factory 4" mids are. A 6.5 fits just as well as the 5.25s...these doors have massive extra space like under the seats

I am doing this with my Promaster 2500 High Roof. I got the JBL GTO 609C Premium speakers that come with tweeters and a crossover for each side. I would recommend also considering an amp to increase quality as there is a limit to what the factory head units can provide for sound quality and adjustments. I am also looking at subs, and I was wondering what sub you decided to go with? Possibly insulation inside the door panel itself...although I think thinsulate would absorb some moisture which is more likely to happen inside the door cavity itself so maybe its best to avoid that in your situation. I am going for a recycled plastic style insulation that I can shove up inside that door cavity. I would love to see a follow up with your subwoofer addition, thanks for the video!
@SmartVan
@SmartVan 6 жыл бұрын
Nice. I'm using an aftermarket Pioneer head unit (I have a tutorial on that install too), so I'm using their amplifier. I have a video on the subwoofer I need to edit and release, but the gist of it is that I choose a powered amplifier, JBL Basspro SL and it's a big improvement. Will see about the thinsulate, I've seen another video of people installing a layer of MLV in the door panel which is more sound dampening and also waterproof which appeals to me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
