The way you went about the rocker is fine if you bought the incomplete rocker, but you bought the whole thing. It's faster to install as whole if you cut it short at the front where the door would interfere with welding and body work. I have proved that time and again and convinced my boss to buy the 300 dollar rockers rather than the 100 dollar ones. I do cab corners usually with the box on because I live in the rust belt, and it despite how much longer it takes to do the cab corners that way, it is probably faster than pulling the box even though it will never be as good as if the box was pulled off. I've been doing body work for over 20 years and found many time saving tips over the years. Tip 1 spot cutter drills are for saving a panel. If you are just removing and discarding, uses a die grinder with a high quality bit followed up by a good air hammer and chisel to finish it's removal. I have found using only the air hammer and chisel works if the rocker is a lot thinner then the inner rocker or bracing it is spotted to followed by a quick grind of what is left of the spot weld. and of course that is just for the spot welds. Plasma cut or cut off wheel for the lapped or butted edges. I like cut off wheels , but the plasma cutter can get in tighter spots. Tip 2 I guess is don't buy plasma cutter. I have one and never use it. It does nothing that much better than tools you likely already have if you get creative as far as sheet metal work goes.

How did you do cab corners without removing the box?
@heavymetalmadness666 Жыл бұрын
@@noahm.7059 I cut out as much as I can, and some stays where I can't get at it where the box really interferes. Butt weld what I cut out, lap weld the slight overlap, I could weld but not cut out, 3m panel bond what I can't weld, and then weld what I can on the inside under the truck where the cab corner ends. The panel bond is after all the welding, I said it in the wrong order. Paint sticks to apply and sand the filler to blend it. Painting isn't much fun either. This way works better or worse depending on the truck model and way they went about the cab corner. This isn't newer collision work, this is rust belt work. If you need cab corners for rust repair there is about zero chance your just going to hit 8 bolts with an impact gun and raise the bed up in a matter of minutes.

after u fix protect with cheap rust busters, Vaseline, mineral oil, used oil etc. I do this to both my towncars and I've not had rust in years. 1 quart of trans fluid, oil, 1 tube of grease and 2 toilet wax gaskets. Melt and mix and use however to apply. Used this for decades in rust belt and no rust. Don't be afraid of acid. Ppl don't follow directions and have issues. If you follow the steps it'll save alot of cutting, welding, mud, paint etc.

When our truck fleet vehicles reach 80,000 miles we put them up for sale at the edge of our lot. We include the vehicles thorough maintenance and inspection report for the life of the vehicle. Last year we sold 24 2008 F250 4x4 extra cab long beds for about $5,000 -$7,500 each. Out mechanics go through them completely before they’re sold. If we allow our fleets to run around looking scabby and rusty it reflects poorly on our brand.

A few suggestions from a certified college trained body man . First...align the door properly...that way if your front door pillar changes position in relation to rear door opening, because the strength of the rocker has been compromised, you will at least have a reliable guide to straighten things out. Second, do most of your panel trimming with a pair of air shears because it's a lot faster...use the cut off wheel as a last resort or on the compound shapes that can't be cut with a shear.

What is a estimated cost in doing the rockers and cab corners like that ?
@heavymetalmadness6665 жыл бұрын
Go to your local body shop and ask, there are way to many variables to even ball park an estimate. Starting from shop rates to the color and quality of paint you want, and what make and model you have. it should not take more 24 hours and then paint and materials for that truck. As good as the inner rockers were and box unbolts maybe 16 hours max. Good rockers cab corners and middle of the road paint are probably 500 for a truck like that. That's just an educated guess
