Excellent work Mark. The best thing about old machinery is that it was designed to be repaired. I’m currently doing a complete restoration on a Craftsman 12” lathe and then on to a Craftsman-King Seeley drill press. Both made from late 50’s to early 60’s. Back then, simplicity was the name of the game. You have a beautiful collection.

Great outcome Winky. As they were just rollers for the chain, did not need a reamed hole, plain drilled would have been fine, bit of slop no problem. Regards from Australia.

You are probably right about that although I've had holes too tight with a dill in the past. Admittedly they are usually too big. It probably had to do with an oversized shaft.

Hey Winky, love your videos! Would you tell me about the cutoff tool/holder you're using at 8:30? I love innovative tools. I bought one of those auto retracting threading tools you reviewed in a prior video. This cutter you're using looks very interesting
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Ай бұрын
Here's the video. It works well although I'm not sure it is optimum. I suspect it needs to be stiffer and possibly the blade needs to be more level. The reason I say this is that it screams at me before it gets under load ((lots of vibration) and then smooths out. Totally functional and I use auto-feed and full RPM. I after cut slower to avoid oil slinging but full SFPM works well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWrUlJdrYtydacUsi=mvVc6jBkK7O3Hxd0

I have an old 1980's HF drill press, and truthfully it's pretty good and I like it. But if the spring ever breaks, there's very little chance I will ever find a replacement. Older is better, but we always knew that, didn't we?
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Ай бұрын
Most the time these old machines are better but not always. This one has a one design issues that I work around. The quill tube is under sized and has an applied rack on the back (new drill presses have the gear teeth cut in the tube). This make the point of force about 1/2" behind the quill tube. Under heavy drilling force the drill moves toward the operator. I keep the tube sleeve the tube slides in adjusted fairly snug to prevent this and use light pressure when starting a drill. Otherwise this machine is excellent quality.

@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Ай бұрын
You might be right... although the original was a roller. It seems smooth and its not driving anything. As long as the roller keeps moving it should last another 106 years.

@WinkysWorkshop Ай бұрын

@terrycannon570
@terrycannon570 Ай бұрын
Mark as I am watching you fit the chain to the roller I ask why not just use an off the shelf sprocket. The rollers in the chain are hardened and do all the work under normal usage. I'm sure what you are doing will be a greater than original repair. I am just thinking outload.
@WinkysWorkshop
@WinkysWorkshop Ай бұрын
The original rollers were mild steel and did *well. This chain has almost no load compared to other applications and no speed. I agree that it would be terrible for a tension idler on a lawn mower The vibration would be terrible and most likely eat up the roller in no time. Mostly I just wanted to keep it as original as possible. When I rebuilt the drill press these was no wear on the back pully and chain but *the front pulley has stopped turning and the chain was riding on the shaft. I presume this is the reason for the 1 or 2 badly worn links. The chain is exactly the same just wider so I suspect it's good for another 106 years.
