Replacing the Rear Brakes - 04 Dodge Dakota

After all of the work we've done on this truck replacing the engine and other things, it looks like we've got another expensive repair bill coming. I'm running in panic mode! But then my mechanic told me how to fix it myself for about $150. Panic avoided!

Great you had the skills and a good mechanic to teach you some new things, but to me the best is that you didn't find out about the brakes while you were pulling the cottage on an adventure. It's interesting that the front brakes provide much more of the stopping force than the rear ones do, they are designed that way. I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma, and it has had two sets of new shoes on the front, and is still running on the (carefully inspected at each brake job) original rear brakes, at 150,000 miles. There is a proportioning valve up close to the master cylinder that ensures the force is applied correctly.

Thats probably the worst case of rust jacking I've ever seen. Wow!!! You are really lucky you've got an honest mechanic who will actually talk to you without charging you. He/she is a keeper!!! A little bit of brake caliper grease or anti-seize under the slider pads will help prevent the rust from coming back, btw. Some quality brake pad kits come with the slider pads, depending on manufacturer of course. You can buy the slider pads separately at most auto parts stores for less than $10 per caliper. Each company calls them something different though, but typically something along the lines of "Brake Hardware Kit", "Brake Caliper Hardware Kit" or "Brake Pad Hardware Kit". Good video and I hope the truck is still running strong.

FYI - when you had the drum off and you could see the emergency brake, it looked to me like the emergency brake pad was rust-frozen to the backplate and was inoperable. At least for the driver side which was in the video. I would check it out before I would trust the emergency brake to hold anything, especially the truck AND the trailer.

Great Vid !, we have 12 month inspections here in New Zealand for vehicles up to 3 years old, then it is 6 monthly called a Warrant of Fitness (WOF), trucks, buses have 6 month inspection called a Certificate of Fitness (COF). I drive a 20 year old Toyota and it passes inspection every time.

Hello Bill , glad to see your still alive and I want you to stay that way so a few tips ....... 1, taking wheel off , chock the frount wheels , 2, put in nutral and hand break off , 3, loosen wheel nuts , 4, jack up truck , 5, put blocks under side of truck , this is to catch truck if it comes off of jack, 6, put axel stand in place. 7, remove wheel , 8 lower truck so axel is in axel stand cup taking the weigh you can keep the jack in place just touching the axel , 9, face mask ready thin gloves on , tools hide mallet , or nylon mallet , NEVER STEEL, .. Note, the dust from you break pads can kill you , the break fluid can give you dermatitis , so mask on gloves on , ( I didn't watch all yor vidio as it give me the ump so dangerous ) .. the wheel hub disc want replacing ? or skimmed the rust you talk about is the disc the pitted part is the steel eroded away ? if you skimed the disc you couldn't drop below the safty minimum thickness , that is because as the pads are worn away the pistons in the calipers would start to chatter and loose fluid jamming sideways being forced beyond the bore ? the little plates are chatter plates the rust under the plate is mostly the dust that has been ground from your disc along with the asbestos from your pads ? when you were grinding away I could watch no more , a scraper is what you needed , .... any cast metal is a potential hazard because it can shatter or tiny pieces fly off if you hit it with a steel hammer ? So in summing up your a lucky man ... my advice ... replace the drums because when the Cottage is in tow, you would not like it if you could not stop , next , most of your braking is done by the frount disc .. so replace disc pads ? ... and always follow the safety advice from me , next the Cottage break cheek .. depends on if cable , rod or hydraulic , emergency braking could flip over the Cottage if it doesn't brake even ? I well aware of cost ? but if you ran over a young mum and killed her for the sake of a few dollars more , you would never forgive yourself , you and Elizebeth are such nice persons it would break my heart , that is why I'm crossing the road to you ! ... please let me know if you understand , Trevor Uk

Why not a new rotor & new e brake shoes while your in there? Old rotor gonna wear your new pads faster. Anti seize the face of hub between studs to make rotor removal easier next time. Great job getting it done & figuring out what to do!

Nice Work !! I cant see how those brakes were working during your last inspection. I live in Allentown, Pa and my guy pulls a wheel off the front and the back. I know we get a a lot of weather in Pa. but .... When was the last time they had to be replaced ? Mine go for about a year, 12-14 months. I have owned several Chrysler products and that is first time I saw those slides. Great job !! Brakes are one of easiest DIY jobs that saves Lots of $$$$ !!! Love the music drill!

Yep, rust will do that. I had my mechanic replace the brakes and front rotors on my last truck the end of last year and they were the original rotors that came on the truck in 2011, so they had been on there for 7 years. He had quite a job getting them off and had to finally heat them with his torch. That's the thing with older vehicles, they start requiring a lot of maintenance. I was getting to that place with my 2011 Dodge Ram. Even though I really liked that truck it's already costing me enough to keep up on things it made it worthwhile to buy a new truck. Because Fiat Chrysler gave me over $6200 off on a new RAM, I bought a 2018 RAM last Sunday. It was a good move considering the low cost on the new one and the improved gas mileage on the new truck also. So even though my payment is a bit higher, the savings I get on gas now offsets that. I like your floor jack, I have one I bought years ago and they come in very handy. Back when I was younger I drove older vehicles and did a lot of my own work including brake work. I changed the calipers on one of my vehicles and it made a huge difference. You'll enjoy driving your vehicle a lot more after this.

I didn't know the '04 Dakota's had rear disc brakes... I have an '06....and it's drums... some anti-seize under your slider things will help slow down the rust jacking next time :)

4 wheel disc brakes was an upgrade option. The base models had discs in front and drum in back. 4 wheel disc is well worth it, IMO. I second the anti-seize or brake caliper grease under the slider pads.

It was that way when we bought the truck. Then I just went to the auto parts store to buy the replacement brake parts, so I assume that was factory.

Lovely hands on video. Just a suggestion, perhaps next time if there is a next time.. try soaking the rust parts with wd-40 or PB Blaster type product. My husband uses these products when he deals with rust from our northern climate those kinds of jobs. :-)

Brakes aren't connected to axle Bill. Never. Rust. We don't have so much problem here in South, where I keep telling y'all to come.... He didn't mention using brake grease on those parts? I'd want to use just a tad. Oh, I commenting as I watch...well, great! I wish they didn't use salt on roads. I know they have to make roads safe, but salt...whew, what a mess. Also, it must run off into streams.
