A fitting tribute to a remarkable woman whose integrity deserves acclaim. The role model of artistry and activism of the highest order. A remarkable human being who resisted victimisation - who maintained extraordinary dignity which commands eternal respect.

I gasped with emotion when I heard about legend Josephine's induction into the Pantheon. As a Canadian white woman of Polish background all the memories of my mother recounting essentially everything I am hearing on this video flooded back. She was from Warsaw and had lived at various times in her life in Paris which she considered her 3rd home. She worshipped Josephine for her many talents and told me everything about her many husbands, her work in the French Resistance, her dancing and singing. The one thing I didn't know as a child at the time was of her Civil Rights activism and her tragic beginnings in the USA as I don't think my parents realized how awful the racism was and continued to be until we took roadtrips to the South and witnessed the reality of America. Indeed "exoticized" is the perfect way to summarize my mother's narrative. And thus we visited the various remaining nightclubs Josephine had performed in in preference over typical tourist ones. I had a personal narrated, sometimes adorned with song, personal tour. Only rare acquaintances had any idea what I spoke about when I mentioned the fabulous Baker over the years. This has been a wonderful experience. Thank you Fr.24.

Beautiful story about your mother. You should read the story about the brave Poles in Haiti. They fought side by side with the enslaved Haitians when France sent them to the island to fight against the revolutionary heroes in order to maintain slavery there. They never returned back to France and became one with the free enslaved people of Haiti 🇭🇹. Be blessed!

First of all, I extend a huge thank you to The New Yorker, 13 December 2021. I did not know about this event until I read about it in The Talk of Town section. Ici, en Amerique, il y a rien de cette cérémonie magnifique. New Yorker et France 24 English, merci mille fois! The historic accounts and background stories (of Ms. Baker's American and French experiences) shared by professor and author, Mr. Young and founder of The Entrée to Black Paris, Ms. Wells give this story/video an extremely humanizing dynamic. So many talking points inspire the yearning to know more about this beautiful and courageous soul.

I've posted this on another clip, but...I'm from Texas. I'm an ADOS that has always organically enjoyed American Black history. I first learned about Josephine Baker from my stanning of The Supremes (both Mary Wilson and Diana Ross) desired to portray her in a movie. I finally deep-researched her when I was taking French in college. Fell in love...again... 😍 💃 A real patriot. I like to thank in an egocentric, self-centered way that me (and perhaps a select others in the world) are responsible for things like this taking place due to our honest, heartfelt feelings about people or things. Change w/o lifting a finger. Just honestly being moved. We (up out of ghettos, slums and trailer parks) feel a **real*** way and the universe alerts others to follow suit... ¡Voila! What an honor this is!

I heard the name Josephine Baker while growing up in Chicago in the 1960s and 70's. She would come to the States periodically and do these shows, but I knew nothing about her. No one mentioned her much, and the pictures I saw of her were rather bizarre - this strange looking old lady wrapped in feathers and elaborate costumes. I was not impressed. It wasn't until many years later as an adult that I learned much more about her, and from then on marveled at what she was able to accomplish considering her upbringing and the times in which she grew up. I have to admit that that I wasn't interested in that banana dance stuff, especially since black women were (and still are) expected to be "sexy savages". It was her work during WWII that drew my attention. Now, I have nothing but admiration for her. I am so happy that France accepted her in the many facets of her life a career and gave her a chance to develop as a human being, something that probably would not have happened in the USA.

Yes but he was a man... Josephine Baker is the 6th woman among 80 Great Ones "remaining" in the Pantheon. And she doesn’t really remains there either. Her remains still in Monte Carlo where Grace Kelly afforded her a mansion to live in when she was in money trouble during her last years. The coffin entering the Pantheon only had 4 handful of lands in it. 1 from Saint-Louis in Missouri where she is born, 1 from Paris, 1 from the Lot area where she raised her 12 adoptive children and the last one from Monaco where she lived until her death.

Not really beside her Saint-Louis native area. FBI make sure she wasn’t cited in any history scholarship manuals after her involvement with M. L. King Jr. She still very obscure and her actual Official burial in the Pantheon didn’t even been exposed in the news shows in USA.

Mate. She gave everything she had for our country and then the FBI forced her to renounce her citizenship. She could have been a dual citizen but after about 4 chances given to embrace her fully your State spat in her face...You do not deserve her. Also Frenchness is a civic nationalism. We do not have a single phenotype or culture in this country and never will. We claim her.

Don’t get it at all most of the people there especially young people have probably never seen ms.
