Follow live coverage of the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, 20 January 2025.
Due to the expected freezing temperatures, Donald Trump will take the oath of office under the Capitol Rotunda, rather than on its steps. The ceremony will be broadcast from the Capital One Arena, a venue in Washington that can accommodate approximately 20,000 people. This arena will also serve as the location for the parade originally planned for the Mall, which was set to feature 7,500 participants. Donald Trump has promised to join the public after taking the oath. The day will conclude with a series of inaugural balls, during which the president will deliver three speeches.
With 25,000 police and military personnel mobilised, 48 km of barriers, snipers stationed on rooftops, and drones patrolling the skies, the security surrounding the event is particularly tight. The Secret Service has described this setup as "more robust" than during previous inaugurations, citing a "more threatening environment." Donald Trump was indeed the target of several assassination attempts during his campaign, including one at a rally where he was injured in the ear.
Prestigious and controversial guests will attend the ceremony. Among the notable figures from the tech industry are Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Tim Cook. Politically, the event will welcome Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French politicians Marion Maréchal and Eric Zemmour, British politician Nigel Farage, and Tino Chrupalla, a leader of Germany's AfD party.
Donald Trump, poised to begin a new presidential term, plans to issue a series of executive orders immediately following his inauguration on Monday, 20 January, aiming to implement several key measures from his campaign.
Immigration: ending birthright citizenship and mass deportations.
Donald Trump has pledged to launch a vast deportation programme targeting undocumented immigrants, estimated at 11 million. He also plans to abolish birthright citizenship via an executive order and declare a state of emergency at the Mexican border. This proposal has drawn significant criticism, including from Pope Francis, who described it as a series of "calamities."
Economy: increased tariffs.
The president intends to raise tariffs on imported goods, particularly from Canada, Mexico, and China, to encourage domestic production. This strategy continues the trade tensions with Beijing that began during his first term.
Presidential pardons: Capitol rioters.
Donald Trump has confirmed his intention to grant mass pardons to those convicted for their participation in the Capitol riot on 6 January 2021. This measure, which he plans to enact on his first day in office, could affect over 1,200 individuals.
Environment: withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and expansion of fossil fuel extraction.
Reaffirming his climate scepticism, the president seeks to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change, intensify oil and gas extraction, and roll back environmental regulations. He has also expressed opposition to electric vehicles, despite his alliance with Elon Musk.
Transgender rights and social policies.
Donald Trump has pledged to limit the rights of transgender individuals, including excluding them from the military and female sports categories. He also plans to ban federal funding for schools teaching "critical race theory" and overturn progressive decisions on gender equality.
These measures, largely enacted through executive orders, could swiftly reshape U.S. political directions, generating both fervent support and significant opposition.
