This my friends is a process to make an identical set of core prints. originally these started out as a wood pair and one got damaged. Instead of wasting time I decided to cast the set in resin off the good print.

Serious question: if they had 3d printers back in the day how do you think it would have changed founderies?
@roscoepatternworks3471
@roscoepatternworks3471 Жыл бұрын
@@DavidVerch simple answer, it would make no difference in the foundry. The difference would be in the patternshop. First 3d printed pattern i saw was about 1985. Someone was looking for a $10k investment from different companies. If I had the money I would have invested. My boss didn't. So how much has 3d printing helped in patternmaking, depends on the job. Oldest pattern I worked on was built in 1936, a frog for the railroad. It used a part of the actual steel track, rest was made with hardwood. Could it be 3d printed today, yes. Could you still be making castings 50 years from now, doubtful. If damaged in the foundry, is it repairable, or is it cost effective to print a new part. My job was to repair, and get it ready to be cast. It took 2 days to repair pattern and core boxes. So you tell me.

@@roscoepatternworks3471 I guess I don't know about the re-use of patterns or how you would produce large amounts of these things. My knowledge is mostly from watching channels like this where they are doing one off items. I worked for Parker Hannifin at one of their valve assembly plants. We got pallets of valve castings and drilled the holes and other stuff into them.

Buy an electronic scale. You can set tare with a single button press, and you see the numbers climbing toward the target without having to feel it or get surprised when the bean finally lifts. Also, there's no waiting for the beam to stop moving, Readings are instant. A decent one only costs around $20-30. If you stay with the balance scale, don't include the stick in the tare weight. That way, the scale will settle while you're returning dabs of rubber to the bottle instead of having to have it settle again after you return the stick to the cup.

A digital scale, a diy vacuum chamber made from a pressure cooker and some mold release spray would help you tremendously. 👍👍 That table saw trick was pretty cool, going to give that a try.

Clark, if you are interested in a vacuum pump, I have several available. They also can be used for inflating tires, sports equipment, and the like. They can draw down to about 26" hg, or I'll give you a deal on a Teflon lab quality vacuum pump that can draw down to 28" or more.

Howdy Clarke! When pouring resin, silicone, or urethane into a mold, try pouring from several inches up. The goo will stretch out into a thin stream which breaks most of the bubbles that are incorporated from mixing. A vacuum chamber and pump are better, though, but will cost at least $100. You might get by for a little while with an old pressure cooker and fridge compressor.

The effect of pour height is fascinating. My mother was a bar tender and she taught me you can control the head of a pint by getting the pour height correct. Also, every beer is different. Therefore, she played a game where at the beginning of every shift, she'd experiment for the first several pours to learn the characteristics of each tap. I really miss her. ☮❤🌈

Cheapest vacuum system is an air venturi, BUT you have to run your air compressor continuously. I've got a small vacuum pump that came with our 5 X 10' urethane membrane frame kit. It was too slow in pulling down the wooden parts and the glue would start to set before full pull down. I use it in my hobby area now. Solution was to run a 2" plastic line, 180', from our 40 HP Quincey used for the CNC. Doesn't affect the CNC. Very fast now!

Any time I have to mix up clearish resin I’ll start by mixing a color thoroughly into one half. Then mix the two parts of the resin. The color makes it easy to dell when they’re completely mixed.

Thanks for this one. Resin curing can be slowed down by maintaining the materials at a cold temperature. Resin is very irritating to skin. Always use glows avoid any health problems in the future.

Great video Clarke! I've only done this once before, so I may have no idea what I'm talking about :). But another option for pouring the rubber mold that may be easier for you may be to flip the part over when pouring the rubber. Glue the flat back part to a board and build the box around it. Then fill the box with the rubber like you did, covering the part completely. when the rubber dries you should have a rubber mold that covers the part on all sides but the back. Then, when filling with resin, make sure the mold is sitting on a flat level surface, with the open back facing up, and fill it till its level with the top. looking at the shape of your piece it looks like you wont need any vents as the open back will act as a giant vent for the entire piece. the piece will then solidify with the back flat and can you pull it out without needing to cut or sand any of it. It should pull out as a finished piece. Again, I've only done this once before, so I may be wrong with my suggestion. But if it sound like it will work and make things easier for you then I'm glad It was of some help :).

That would work, but you may need to add a small bit to that bottom, due to there being a meniscus when you pour. It's better to have the result a bit too thick than otherwise.

I could see myself really getting into a craft like that, the complete from idea or concept of the project to clean up of the castings appeals to me, each job is a series of challenges to find a work around, and you have to think ahead on how this part of the process syncs into the next then finally how will it ram up, take the hot metal when you pour it, have you worked out the best way for the sand mould to fill without voids and have you catered for shrinkage? Then once you pour and then finally see the finished project how is clean up going to happen and the finished product It's a 3D jigsaw puzzle and you have to make the puzzle completely, sometimes from just an idea. I can see why there are so few pattern makers around Not to many people are willing to commit time and effort into doing things this creative especially if the job could be done by CNC and mechanised. I can't wait to see the next part Clarke, I guess you are casting in brass? Being a cross. I'm enjoying the learning Clarke thank you for taking time to show me how it's all done from the beginning (I can't speak for other peoples 🤔) even though I have been watching you for years it's still very fascinating. I think I would be if I lived near by and not in Western Australian one of those neighbours willing to drop by to lend a hand, often 😁 if allowed, whats not to like, being a Craftsman, creating and playing with fire and hot metal! pretty easy to make up a vacuum chamber. Pick up a big old aluminum mirro pressure cooker and then order some 3/4"-1" polycarbonate/lexan type clear plastic to make a lid. Use some silicone to make a gasket and you're pretty much set. Drill and tap some pipe threads for your hoses, valves and gauge on top. easy peasy. BTW check out Brick in the yard mold supply channel for tons of examples on how to do mold making with all the various mold rubber, plastic and techniques

You have to be careful that you only slow pull a vacuum, too fast and it will "boil" out of the box. I have found something with a thick clear plexiglass and a valve allowing atmosphere in on a controlled method works best

Have you measured how many amps the furnace blower and valve need. So you could get a battery and an inverter to run it. So power outages don't effect your work. I have car batteries and uninterruptible power supplies. The power was out all over the state a decade ago. I'm sitting in my apartment watching broadcast tv with a floor lamp on. The neighbors came knocking wondering why the power is on in my apartment but it's out everywhere. My mind flashes to them showing up with extension cords. I said I pay my power bill the day it comes. The power company has no reason to cut off my power. They left very confused.
