I think it makes sense on two fronts one you need room for your draft picks to grow and two if he’s the clear three and you trade him and not on of your bottom tier guys I think they got there eyes on something better coming up after the deadline

In base, Armstead is going to be the 3-tech. Given that he figures to start, and that they want to manage his reps, it doesn’t seem likely that he will get more reps on the edge. You will see him move around, but he will probably be on the field with Allen and Walker in most situations, so I doubt he will stay in the game and kick outside to spell them. I do agree that if Walker or Allen goes down you are likely to see him play outside more.

All that considered I could see if the jags current roster present a different set of strengths and weaknesses....gipson could represent what worked in the past with different roster constructions however I do see your point

Edge have to win and put up pressure on the QB and I have not seen a jaguars player able to put up pressures like Gipson (from the Non starting players)

We did have a problem with the defensive line they were going to have to cut some good players so we'll see. just disappointing to trade our third best pass rusher for basically nothing. Seahawks fan here. Saw a Bears fan say they cut him and he sucked, but his pass rush PFF numbers are elite, high 80's in multiple years. I have to say I love this trade from what everyone's saying, but I'm not real familiar with him. Can't be worse than Darrell Taylor against the run.

Von Miller said this about him "He's the best right tackle in the National Football League! And he may even be a top-five tackle, period, in the National Football League. There's not another tackle who's that tall, that big and can move the way he moves." 2018 traded to patriots for a 3rd round pick. Started all 16 games and won super bowl. 2019 signed with raiders and became highest paid offensive lineman in league. 2021 traded back to patriots for a 5th rounder. 2024 signed with Bengals. Not bad for a balke 7th round pick. I mean you did ask?

This is definitely a risky move but if it works out it's masterful. Basically getting a 6th round pick for free. I would imagine they really like some of their depth on the d-line/edge and would prefer to pick up an extra pick and keep 1 more young guy around. No risk-it, no biscuit.
