Report: Talks Between the Lakers and Dan Hurley to Become the Next Coach are "Accelerating"

The Lakers shocked the NBA world Thursday when the news broke (via Woj) that the Lakers are pursing UConn head coach Dan Hurley for their open head coaching gig.
They are, reportedly, ready and willing to pay through the wazoo and commit to a lengthy deal in order to entice Hurley to leave Storrs. They're intrigued by Hurley's ability to develop young players and build a program in response to changing eras in the NBA... in addition to his well-earned reputation for offensive innovation (and a high intensity demeanor).
So is Hurley an inspired choice? Or is he another version of the Lakers getting caught up chasing the big shiny object?
Much more the former. Particularly when the other options are themselves wild cards. You can question whether Hurley will translate, should the Lakers get him, but there's a lot more known there about what kind of coach you're getting than there is with JJ Redick. The reward is still high, but the risk is actually much lower (aside from the extra $ they'll have to put out to make it happen).

Hey guys! Have u seen “The Usual Suspects”? If u have then Dan Hurley is Verbal Kint in this story and JJ Redick is Kobyashi. This has been a misdirect. JJ was never the top coach. The Lakers have been interviewing for head coaches sure, but ALSO have been interviewing assistant coaches for Hurley. LeBron’s “He’s great and staff is great” line tells me he knew too. There is no possible way JJ and LBJ did not know about this. SF 49ers did this hiring John Lynch. If anyone heard about it the deal was off.

Nothing really different in Managing people in the Corporate World. Star Veteran employees have earned the respect from their bosses and they give them space they need. While for people who still need guidance will be of course micro-managed more for them to be good on what they do and develop. It's all about the Manager getting the respect from his team and also how coachable will be his different team members are.

I don't think Shams's reporting was completely wrong - Redick was/is a real candidate, in who (whom?) the team has real interest But this aspect of it was kept so close to the vest, he didn't have access to it. And I'm sure those who knew the intention to try and get Hurley interested were happy to let the speculation continue, both because it was real but also it kept attention away from the Hurley piece of it. But all that said... you do get a sense that Woj is REALLY enjoying this. BK

I think your comment that chasing titles every year no longer works is on point. Trading EVERYBODY and stripping the team to nothing just so LBJ has a shot is stupid. Hurley is a long term move and to me, means that the Laker's front office have finally realized that LBJ is no longer their future. We'll see evidence of this IF LBJ only gets a one or two year deal, and not the 3 year extension that it seemed was coming. Love to see Hurley get a chance to work with Christie, Lewis, Castleton, and JHS.

Uconn cannot match what the lakers bout to offer. Highest coach in college makes 9.5 mil per. Hurley makes 5 mil a year. Uconn is not goin 15-20 mil per season stop it bruh!
